proof is in the pudding! this is why I food plot!

So I began food plotting in 2002, prior to that the biggest deer we had killed on our 40 acres was a 14 inch 8 pt. It was simple, as soon as the ag ground was harvested the deer left to better ground. So I began plotting. Since that year we my wife, father and myself) have shot 12 bucks that have all been shoulder mounts! I have done lots of habitat improvement and my standards have changed over the years, however it all resorts back to getting a high quality food source out there. I watch deer move in to our property every year, they never did this before. As the season went on in the past there were fewer and fewer deer. Now as season goes on I get more and more deer by the day. I will have as many or more bucks on camera in the weeks to come than I did in August. Why? food!
if you have never put in plots, and want to spend the winter studying up, ask lots of questions and develop a plan. its hard work, but there is nothing that compares to seeing a deer come in and eat on the plot you put blood sweat and tears into!

Here are the bucks we shot on our 40 this year!
First up is homeboy, he was a 4.5 yr old 8. My dad shot him with his crossbow as he walked the edge of food plot in pre rut checking doe's.

next is re-turd he is a 3.5 yr old 6pt I have been watching him for two years, he showed zero potential to do anything horn wise and was trying to be the dominant buck on our place! shot him nov. 11th in a small kill plot as he breaked from chasing a doe to scrape and eat, with my bow.


the 3rd is captain hook, my wife shot him november 16th with her gun in a kill plot as he walked in to check the doe that was feeding in the plot.

the fourth is the 11pt. I hunted this deer most of the year and could never get on him. he was mostly nockturnal. I only saw him a few times in daylight all bow season. Novemeber 23rd we had a terrible storm blow in and the temperature dove down hard. I figured it would just be a matter of time before he showed himself in daylight. the 24th I harvested him with my rifle while he was feeding in a small kill plot. He showed up a full hour before dark, suprised me when I saw him coming in!




all four of these bucks were taken in or on the edge of food plots. they have been a huge key to our success! this was our best year to date and i look to improve upon it in the years to come!

I plant lots of stuff! lol I have a clover blend, a brassicas blend, and a blend of wheat, oats, lupine and clover. also have some sainfoin in there as well. I have a half acre of perrenials, and the other 4.5 acres is annuals that are highly attractive in fall.

Awesome man! Congrats to you and your wife. I am going to be planting food plots this upcoming year. I planted a small one this year with brassicas. The deer never touched them. I am going to do some type of bean this time around.

 

Love the pictures, nice bucks. What state are you hunting in. I have real nice food plots and cant hold bucks.

yes sir! its a 80 lb MR5, I love it. It is a difficult bow to shoot but by far the most accurate bow I have ever shot.

 

Good to see that hard work paying off.

 

Nicely done! Very soon I will be heading to the cabin to clear out more of our woods that we will be making into a food plot this year. Hopefully we have the same success. We haven't had a winter mix planted yet just clover on out two plots.

You've got me pumped about food plots. I've got a great lease that the owner already does some food plots but I'm going to get in there and turn it up a few notches. Keep us posted.
