Okay all you beer snobs, I have a question about Church Brew Works Pious Monk Dunkel

A friend of mine from work and I often discuss new beers that we have tried and he has recently told me about his "all time favorite" which is a Church Brew Works Pious Monk Dunkel. He has told me that it is a "must try" brew and that I "have to get some". I have had a few Church Brew's before and really enjoyed them, but I have heard the Pious Monk Dunkel described as an "off flavored Sam Adams Oktoberfest". I was simply wondering if anybody has tried this and if it is worth going out of my way to get my hands on some.

 

Never tried it. Warstiener dunkel is a great everyday beer. It's so good, the FDA should make it a food group.

If you want to one up him, try a triple fermented Duvel from Belgium. 8% alc. by volume. Final fermentation takes place in extra thick bottles to withstand the pressure. The labels' a real hoot: "guaranteed not fresh" "share with good friends and good looking strangers". Under proper conditions it keeps for years. The taste is a blend between beer and champaign with a pronounced cherry finish. Truly a great beer.

 

I've tried most CBW beers. The monk dunkel is a solid beer but I would hardly consider it a must try.
If you want to talk "must try" from CBW, that would be thier coconut stout that comes out around memorial day.
Lastly, while we are on the subject. My all time favorite must try beer comes from Rivertowne Pourhouse in Monroeville. It is thier pumpkin spice beer and is usually released early-mid october. Now I know everyone has a pumpkin these days, but these guys were brewing it before pumpkin was cool. Its on a nitrogen tap and they rim the glass with sugar and cinnamon. It's like drinking the best pumpkin pie you've ever had.

 

I've never had it but here's a link that you can read a bunch of reviews on it. I've never seen it in my area so I assume it isn't distributed in NC. It's rated about average.

Can't imagine any Dunkel being a "must try" beer. The style itself is just boring, as are most lagers.

 

I have yet to have a dunkel worth talking about.

The point is, most trendy craft beers are crap.

 

Please explain in further detail.

And also please explain how linking to Duvel was proving that point.

I just drink beer that I like and don't give a flying fart what other people think about it.

I think for an accurate beer taste rating, you have to find people with similar tastes to yours to determine what you may or may not like. While the "Beer Advocate" may be fun to read, it would seems some "beersnobs" can't stand one beer while another group love it, and while the "beersnobs" may love one most others may hate it. Not familiar with the beer in question, but I'm always for giving something in the class of beers I like a shot. That being said, I have probably 5 different styles in the fridge right now, and I like all of them.

 

I find beer advocate ratings to be helpful if the beer is a style that I already know I like. For instance I know I enjoy IPA'S/DIPA'S and it helps let me know flavor profile and what other people that enjoy ipa's thought of it. If it were a style I've never had before it would be a different story.

 

Hooker, my comments weren't directed at you, nonetheless, my comments may be viewed as inflammatory, which wasn't my intent. I also haven't tried the beer in question and interjected my tastes in place of specific knowledge. As others have remarked, it's all about what you like. If MGD, tastes great to someone, I have no business telling them otherwise.
