I just browsed a thread about brace height, and it fits in with this discussion as well. The faster a bow, the lower the brace height, and the shorter the axle to axle, the harder it gets to get broadheads to fly accurately. Add to that the fact that faster bows tend to make guys think they can shoot further, with less regard for judging distance, and IMO the answer becomes yes, speed (indirectly) is to blame for more missed and wounded deer.

I'm sure my arrow speed ain't nothing to brag about with my compound....Im using a 10 year old low-mid range bow. By using a recurve bow shooting at probably less than 200 fps I've gotten complete pass throughs because I beefed up the arrow tip weight. That should tell people something.

Shooting rebar for whitetails is just fine. Hunting the west or scoring well at a 3d tourney and heavy slow arrows become a great liability. Momentum is meaningless if you miss do to arrow drop. That's why 3d tourneys have multiple classes which all group/separate speed. Guys shooting less then 280 fps have ZERO chance of winning a 3d tourney. Making a 70 yard hunting shot on a speed goat given enough time to laser? OK, if you have enough room in the sight bracket for a 6th pin.

Damn, I just shot a 305 on a 30 target course shooting my 230 fps. Unknown yardage.

Trajectory is completely misunderstood when it comes to archery.

The only thing that matters is mis difference from slow to fast. That isn't that great at 3d yardages. Yes speed helps in that game to maybe catch a line but misjudge by 10 yards and you still miss with either.

Many pro 3ders use the same bow for ibo as they do for asa that has a speed limit in place. Now 290 fps but used to be 280.;)

What was the yardage variance? Scoring system? Do you shoot a 7 pin sight? Cal/Nev is out to 90 yards, 10/8/5/0. I shoot 24 3ds/year. Take out the unlimited class(magnified optic, shooting pencils with a 3 foot stabilizer) and the straight up hunting bows that win shoot either side of 300fps with 7 pin sites.

It was an ibo course. I shot hunter class but I had a moveable sight so I wrote fun at top of my card.

I've shot plenty of 3d courses from the open stake and won at sub 280 speeds.

I know this to be fact. With my old protec there was only a 1/2" in poi difference on a 3 yard miss judge of yardage at 40 yards from 260 fps to 280 fps. Arrow weight being the only difference.

Interesting difference in 3ds between regions. 1/3 of the 42 targets unmarked are 40-90 yards out here. Goodluck shooting 235 fps.

I think some people are starting to understand that speed is more about marketing than what they thought.

I am shooting a Mathews Z7 Magnum 70# 29 in draw with 340 arrow and I get 316fps. And NO fast bows are not wounding deer. Poor shot selection, dull blades wound deer!

Kind of what I was thinking. I don't think the 50yd shots shown on TV are the reason but, the pros not informing the general public that they don't recommend it being done or go into detail about how much practice they have done. Then they glorify the distance and that's what the new Bowhunter gets out of it.

TV hunters are leading people down the wrong path, real bow hunters don't have a editing staff to erase the misses the bad hits and game not found.

It's not the bow that makes a bad shot slow or fast you the hunter has to know what yourself and your bow can do,past that you have to live with your shot in the end.

Of course but it's the most realistic 3d for western hunting. Shooting 10's inside of 40 yards is great for arrow mfg and really boring. 42 target, unmarked, 15 are 40-90 yards. BHFS (bowhunter freestyle) is 7 pin fixed, 308 max chronod at the tourney=405-410/420 wins it.

    Add the 11, s

    300 par (all 10's)

    (3) 8's = -6 =294
    (11) 11's = +11

    294 + 11 = 305

    305 total

Speed is not the key, no matter if it's hunting or 3d.

Momentum is a better measure of penetration, in my opinion, and my father's who has a degree in physics.

HOWEVER, only if you are logical about it. Example: A train is incredibly slow, but has a huge amount of momentum. You can shoot an eraser end at a huge amount of speed, but will do little to no damage. You must find a happy medium.

A slow bow with a heavy arrow and a correctly placed shot will kill a deer.
A slow bow with a heavy arrow and a incorrectly shot will not kill a deer.

A fast bow with a light arrow and a correctly placed shot will kill a deer.

I was shooting much better in 3D with a bow shooting 290 fps than a bow shooting 315 fps.

How many javelina, skunk or coyote are at 90?

Shooting unmarked yardage out to 90 would be extremely difficult and speed would be a huge advantage. Realistically speaking, I'm not firing my bow at even 50 without a rangefinder, regardless of speed in a hunting situation.

ASA may only have a 45 yard max but there are no big targets and the 12's are really small.
