2012 Food Plot. A work in progress (Picture Heavy)

I picked up my Soybean seeds today at lunch, and will hopefully be able to get them in the ground tonight. I'm using a roundup ready soybean w. an excellent shatter resistance rating since I plan on leaving them standing all winter long. Hopefully they will provide a food source all fall and throughout the winter.

 

I was able to get the soybean broadcast and harrowed in last night. 3 plus acres w. a hand crank bag seeder will wear you out, but I got it done. Now its in mother natures hands. Hopefully we will get a couple good rains soon to help speed along the process.

Looks like you planted real world beans. Im just order a bag myself, planting to small plots (1/4 acre) and hoping to also keep the deer around late season.

 

Not Real World. I actually just bought ag beans from the local seed store. I looked at the Real World but w. shipping, they got very expensive. I was able to get the ag beans for 43.85 a bag.

 

No question about it, forage beans are expensive but since this is my first year planting, I wanted to use beans that were RR so i spent the extra. I only figured they were RW since you said they were shatter resistant. Let me know how they work for you, and are they RR?

 

Yes, roundup ready. I even had to sign a Monsanto agreement to purchase them. Kinda funny for a food plot. I just told the rep that I wanted roundup ready soybeans that had the best shatter resistance and would grow in our soil. He told me to get this particular type. I'm just trusting that he knows what he's talking about, but I'm guessing they wouldn't stay in business selling to farmers if he didn't. I hope you have good luck w. the Real World, the look like a great product. I would have chosen those over the Eagle seed because I'm more concerned w. late season forage than I am for fall forage. There's plenty of food around here during the fall, it's after they have cleaned up all the harvested seeds that they need a good food source, and I'm hoping by leaving mine standing all winter, they will be eating mine.

I would also put up a little exclusion cage to see how much the deer are eating off the beans.

I thought real world soybeans and eagle beans were round up ready. ?

 

They are. There are quite a few varieties of beans that are RR. And anything RR you must fill out paperwork to Monsanto, saying you wont steal their breed of RR beans since they are the only producer of RR beans at this time.

 

We need some rain here. It hasn't rained since I put them in. When I planted them, we had rain forecast for 2 days last week and it didn't rain either time. I took a quick look and only found a few that had started to come up.

According to an article I read, the patent runs out next year, and the gen 1 roundup ready beans will no longer be protected. Monsanto has already released a new "higher yielding" variety that will be under patent. This means that other brands will be able to duplicate and sell the original round up ready beans. So hopefully there will be a bit more competitive pricing on those beans.

 

Same here!!! Finally got rain last night and more coming today...finally we'll get some popping.

 

It's been about 10 days since I planted and we haven't seen a single drop of rain. The ground is bone dry. I have some germination, but very limited. PLEASE RAIN!!!!!





I hope the deer aren't getting to the beans as they are coming up. Here's a picture of the perimeter that I haven't planted yet(going to put in Sorgum), near a bedding area. They have been walking all over it.


This looks like a bed to me, what do you think?


Here's what my creek crossing looks like, all dried up.

 

FINALLY, we got some rain. Had a thunderstorm come out of nowhere, got quite a bit or rain and a bunch of hail about marble sized to go along with it. Hopefully that will really get the ball rolling.
