Getting a Garmin GPS

Got a Garmin Etrex legend on the way, not the one I would have picked but it was a 25 year safety award choice! I can see this being very handy especially if hunting out of state or Shed hunting out of state in unfamiliar areas. Or setting stands deep in new areas and being able to find them. Does any one have this one or can you just give me some tips on what ever your using for hunting. The way points will probably be my main use with it.

I have a Garmin. I have to use a GPS because I would easily get lost in the woods without one. I apparently have a horrible internal compass lol. I use the waypoints to mark stand locations, deer sign and also mark where I park my truck. I also use mine to follow routes into stands and back out to the truck.

 

I have that one also but not sure where it is. I know it is pretty basic but works for waypoints and routes. I switched to the Rino 530Hcx and love it. I take my Garmin with me everywhere.

Dinko, I got an older one and it doesn't work to well if you don't have a clear view of the sky. Bought a Bushnell a couple of years ago and it works much better. Plus with those enourmously fat fingers of yours I doubt you will be able to operate the small buttons!

I have the etrex venture which I think is similar and I use it to mark everything from stand locations to rubs and scrapes. The only downside is that it will only put you close (within 30 yards) to your waypoint.

 

30 yards or 30 feet? Mine is usually accurate to within 19 ft.

 

I also have the garmin gps and I believe the accuracy is dependent on where you are in reference to there satellites, just like a cell phone so if you have good service the accuracy will be much better.

 

to get better "service on a GPS you need a clearing in the woods.

Be gentle with that toggle button. We used to use the etrex but had problems with the toggle button failing. I have a drawer full of etrexes that you can only move up, or left, etc. Moved to the 76 and 78 series and have never had a problem.

 

I use my phone, but if you're in a place without reception you're SOL.

 

Best thing my GPS does for me is help me adjust on the run. Sometimes I have to hunt areas that I have never stepped foot on prior to heading out into. I look at the wind, some aerial and topo maps, plug in the coordinates to my GPS and I am ready to hunt.

You can scout and plot points throughout the year, jot down notes on each waypoint, and really get a good feel for your hunting grounds as you compare your visual to the map layout on the GPS.

 

I have never used one so I can not help you but was wondering how people thought about them. I am going to start to go to Canada on some shed hunting trips and thought about getting one.
