My body is jello. We need horses. Saw a butt load of animals. The coolest of which were four bull moose. They stayed in front of us for over 45 minutes. We also saw four big bucks in a group. 2 were real big and tall. (I don't have an archery deer tag) They were within 200 yards and would have been an easy shot with a rifle. All the bulls were in groups of 6 to eight. I have never seen so many bulls in my life. We saw some real big boys. We also saw a bunch of cows. We saw well over 100 elk. They were not talking at all. The cows were cool but the bulls seemed spookey. I'm glad it's a long season.
As far back as we were and as early as it is, we are only willing to shoot a really nice bull. No way I was packing out a 4 point or a cow in that terrain. We decided to back out and wait until they were talking. You have a lot better chance in the rut to get a big boy by calling him in. Getting him in a feeding pattern without the rut takes a lot of luck.
But thats half the fun. lol. I stopped hunting big woods for that reason. Fields and logging trails for me!
That would be called hunting not luck.If you can glass across canyon and find where they go into the timber in the a.m then you have a good chance at a night time ambush or vise versa in the morning.
I would have never though of that?? Jeesh. I'm glad you can figure out my hunting situation and schedule without even being there. Maybe, I could come hunt with you some day and you could teach me how to hunt elk?? I'll send you a pm asking for some more pointers before we go back out.

This is a tuff place to hunt. We are trying to find a way to get in with horses. Horses or not, we will be there for the rut.
