Sharpening NAP Hellrazors...?

I just ordered a new pack of Hellrazors and out of the pack these things need sharpened? I was a bit surprised since I always heard that all NAP products are scary sharp?

Anyhow I figure I need to get something to sharpen them anyhow. I have a cheap broadhead sharpener that would probably work but I am curious if the G5 Stone is the better way to go? Also would a regular old Arkansas Homing Stone do just as well if I rig something to hold the angle?

Any insight appreciated in how to properly sharpen this broadhead?

I just bought 2 packs but have not opened mine yet. You have me wondering about mine now. I'll have to check them when I get home this evening.

Gri22ly showed me how to sharpen my knife with a diamond stone. Now I also use the stone to sharpen my fixed blade broadheads. The stone works great and does not take much effort.

 

Mine were good and sharp. They were sharper out of the box than the G5 Montec CS that I use to shoot. I have been wanting to try the Hellrazors and increasing my tip weight to 125 gave me a good excuse to go buy some.

Did you rig anything up to get the exact angle everytime?

Nope, just estimated it and repeated the same stroke. It worked just fine.

 

What angle are you talking about? You lay them flat on a stone and pull them backwards.

 

I wasnt sure if thats all there was to them or not? I seen where G5 made there stone and I thought there was some kind of "dip" in the stone?

Hoosier... they are not the practice heads, but thats a good thought!

 

Keep in mind the thickness of the blade and the angle that it was sharpened on, they will never feel as sharp as replaceable blades.

Years ago there was a Co. (True Angle) that made ceramic sharpening stones for broadheads that also made a board with 2 files screwed to it for changing the angle of the cutting edge on a Snuffer. They were pricey, but I still kick myself in the butt for not picking a set up back then.

 

I was just wondering if they had packaged them wrong , only reason i mentioned it was because i had myself got practice tips from from G5 in the regular Montec packages , i guess it was a slip up in the packageing department and could as well happened to you , i have never seen a Hellrazor that wasnt Razor Sharp out of the package let alone all of them.

 

I am going nuts trying to sharpen these damn things! I have spent atleast 2 solid hours on one head! I can get it sharp but not near enough to my liking?

I have tried everything from two seperate arkansas stones, numerous diamond stones and have went through my whole lansky sharpening kit trying to get a good edge on these things. If they didnt fly so good and cost me so much i would have given up long ago!

I even went as far as going to the local sports shop earlier to make sure I didnt have practice heads, and after looking at a pack of them I for sure do not have practice heads.

I dont get it, I have never heard a bad remark about NAP's sharpness but yet I get a pack that wont cut didly squat?
I dont know if I am expecting too much or what, but I feel I should atleast be able to shave the hair on my arms...Am I correct?

I guess tommorow the last resort is going to be taking a solid steel file and completely cutting a new edge on them. Wish me Luck!

 

Wow! That is unheard of from my experience with these heads. Most of my buddies shoot the HellRazors and/or the Montecs and we all sharpen then the same way. We all use the diamond sharpener that virginiashadow posted above. Last year I even sharpened mine while driving to my hunting grounds (probably NOT recommended!!) as it is so easy. Based on knowledge I gained when I worked in a cutlery store I actually just lay the heads flat on the blades and do small circles....maybe 5-6 on each of the 3 sides of the BHs. These heads are made to just sharpen them by laying them flat on the blades as it is the "correct" angle for sharpening.

I would suggest if you are still having problems getting them sharpened to your standards contact NAP. They have great customer service.

I have that exact kit laying around somewhere from my days when I shot Zwickey 2-blades. Works great!

As for the HellRazors, I'm not sure what your requirement is for sharpness but I've never had a problem w/mine. Out of the box they're more than sufficient for hunting, and a few strokes on a diamond stone after practice and they're good as new again.

If anyone is wondering I was FINALLY able to get a decent edge on the heads. It took a old mill file to cut the edge rougher and then I smoothed it out with a series of diamond stones and finished with a polishing stone.

There not exactly shaving hairs but they are cutting them, so it will have to work!
