Looks like the White House finally got it right for once and Pres. Obama signed a law to give the STATES back control over managing the wolves. Wolf season looks like a go for next fall in Idaho!
Yes and keep the tags affordable for all to purchase.. Wolves are wiley critters. and in Idahos rugged back country.. many will never even be seen by humans..
Im with ya shed hope those tags are some what affordable. And like you said most of the back country out here can get fairly hairy at times making it hard to hunt/ find animals.
What has the wolf population trend been like over the last say 15 years for MN wolves? WI had a population goal of 350, but its estimated that we now have well over 700 here and growing rapidly. We need to take some out here, in a bad way. Now, with that said, comparing a WI or MN management plan to that of WY, ID, or MT is comparing apples and oranges. Wolves in the western states, IMHO, should be pretty much eliminated. The damaging effects they have had on populations of game is disturbing. What is also disturbing is that the strain of wolf that was introduced in the west is not the same strain that was originally there. They are a much larger and more efficient killer. So, honestly, wolves should become extinct in the western states again and stamp the federal project that reintroduced them with an epic fail and close the book on this mess.
MN populations have more than doubled since 1989, from about 1500 to what they now estimate in the 3200-3500 range. I agree that each state should be able to make their own plan. I know that whats best for my state (or county, or me) isn't neccessarily going to work for the rest of the country (or state, or others). A big part of why I think MN's is more thorough is the simple fact that they've been working on it for 3-5 times longer. The MN DNR has always had a working plan because we've always had a population. I'm afraid that many of my fellow statesmen are going to be disappointed if they think that they will be hunting MN wolves any time soon, de-listing or not.
