Up here the gullys are the places to be, those and the pine plantations. That spike was traveling the gully. In these winds I was set up where the sanctuary flowed into the mouth of our gully, on the east side I these west winds. Neighbours sanctuary has a ravine with a steep east facing pasture slope..I know where most deer are today for sure. They will not hunt opening weekend anymore. It avoids pushing the big boys back to the hunting properties that line their 100 acres.

Seen 1 doe this morning in the distance. Cousin wants to hit up the state land this afternoon. I have 3 good spots picked out but he like to wander sometimes. Gotta stay put.

After a quick duck hunt a few if us we heading down the creek back to the trucks. Jumped several deer and seen a bear. So we decided to put up a ladder stand in the swamp. It was fun kayaking with a two man ladder stand up the creek several hundred yards. Spot looks nice with a rifle. This is about 80 yards off the creek. Lots of bear sign and claw marks on trees. Ran back to truck to refuel on some lunch and water. Meet up with a buddy and he came back in with me for a evening hunt. I walked the same trail in that I left on and 3 does had bedded in that time right on the edge. Good sign I guess? Mid day movement. I'm hunting same area as this morning just moved about 50 yards up on a ridge and out of swamp. All the bucks passed thru this spot this morning.

Good luck all again! Think it's time for me to release a arrow and stop passing deer!

Had a blast gun hunting. My goal was a nice doe and i was able to get that done.

On friday i went and helped a young fella who always hunted with his grandpa and he passed away not long ago. He never gutted a deer so i had no problem cutting my hunt short to go help out. He had a little barn kitten that followed us back to the field where he shot it and that little booger started nursing on that does milk. Blew my mind it had milk all over its face. 34F2D3B6-9CF5-4A51-B7D9-2B0B70E14C44.jpeg
Then found an awesome score. Huge Hen of the woods that was still good! Warmed it up and gave it a little water and it came to life! Mmmmm. 120AE3C3-109D-4F2E-8524-6AC274D14707.jpeg
Had a great time with family and friends. Rolling dice, drinking beer and whiskey, and eating awesome food. Had tenderloin omelettes for breakfast this morning. I had junk service so have catching up to do on here. Hope everyone had a great weekend.

So my hunt last night got a little interesting.

So around 4:30 i had what looked like an 8 coming thru the cornfield. I doe bleated and he would turn towards me but only came to 61 yards before going over the nole in the field. As he disappeared a shot went off then a second one. A pause then a third. After the first shot i turned and seen 3 deer goin over the ridge. They disappeared as i grabbed my binos and i see 3 people walk into the field. I just talked to the landowner and knowing he wasn't around i packed my stuff and headed back to the truck. Got in and drove up the road. The 3 guys were in a ditch behind the truck in the backyard of a house. Not seeing a deer at all i called the dnr. He took my report. Called me back 2 hours later and said he made it there. Had a decent buck hanging in a tree. 13 year old with his dad shot a buck without any license with a 308. Dnr gave tickets took the gun and deer. Then headed out and called to thank me.
Said the deer had been shot with a bow. I said right front shoulder. He said yes. Do you shot a 3 blade broadhead. I said fixed 3 blade g 5 montec. He said yup thats it. So it was the one i shot in the shoulder monday. He thanked me and said he will put me in for a poacher reward.

Rifles are not allowed during gun season in Iowa? So, no license, illegal firearm but no tresspassing charges?
