So I drove up the road to get a signal to talk to the old lady and check in on the thread- that's a great buck Brett, you should be proud.

As for me, my hunting partner and cousin already had one freezer buck on the books for the season, he'd been seeing decent 6-8 pointers the past few days at his stand in the swamp, he didn't feel like going out tonight so he told me to go sit his stand, I was there and about an hour till dark I could see a doe being chased by a buck across the cattails in some cedars maybe 80 yards out, I couldn't tell what the buck was.
After about 20 minutes of grabass, the doe came on a line straight towards me and ran less than 5 yards under my stand and past me. I could just see antlers coming through the cattails so I drew back and as he cleared the tall stuff he kind of turned broadside, I didn't even look at the rack, and just as I touched the release trigger he turned more directly towards me, so I hit him high above his near shoulder but under his spine, barely exited his offside hindquarter and (later determined) broke his back leg, he staggered about 40 yards, stood there for over a minute. I launched another arrow but it deflected off a branch into the stratosphere- and then he tipped over. There was no blood to speak of but upon gutting I got most all of his near lung and destroyed his liver, a bit of gut but not bad.

Ended up being about 12" swooping spikes on either side, with a non-countable fork on the end of one. I'll post pics tomorrow.

In all honesty, this year has humbled me. I'm a killer, not a hunter.

No shame in that admission, is what it is and truth be damned. I was afforded an opportunity and took full advantage of it.

Next couple years will solidify my status for hunting. Can I adapt and overcome or do I submit and throw in the towel?

I have to put in the work either way. Full commit or half assed for hope?

    To be continued...
