Found a new piece of property to hunt this year

269 acres, of prime land, looks like i have some walking to do this summer.

Hey VS can i start by sending you the location and have you tell me where to start to look.!?????

i think this is gonna be the kick i need.

i've never been on the property before. i know its all woods, i believe there are ag fields on 2 sides.

any ideas what to look for other than deer signs?

The the things I initially look at/for
1 Topo
2 vegetation (edges, what is growing in different areas, funnels/tunnels).
3 Water

Basically components that lean toward the food, water, shelter...

 

All woods surrounded by ag on two sides? Sounds like a great property and I'd think very likely to be a main bedding area.

 

Congrats! Find the rub areas and work out from there,looking at historic wind direction. Walk the edges to find entrance / exit trails and work in to property. Side hill layouts to winds Thick cover and type of. Hard and soft mast. If there are apples or persimmon. Look for flowers now and then the one or two that are completely tore up underneath. That will be a favourite they all hit. Have Fun!

 

As @wl704 said, look for changes in topo features, draws will probably be bedding, ridges and saddles will be likely funnels with deer trails. Walk the edges of the food lot along fence lines and look for low or down spots in the fence where it is easier for the deer to come out. Look for food sources in the woods; acorns dropping, persimmons, or whatever the local seasonal browse sources may be.

Congrats! Find the old wood ladder stand that’s been there for 50 years and rotted to the core and hunt that location. Those old stands seem to always be in a good spot.

Hopefully a creek on property. If so walk that creek from one side to the other. Check for deer crossings and tracks in in the banks. Big tracks usually mean big bucks. If no creek, walk the entire perimeter of property. Find the deer trails exiting the property and follow them back to there beds. Mark the location so when hunting season starts you can get as close as you can with out busting them out.
