Couple more in same bottom. Haven't made there way up yet. Did spot a possum about 150 yards out

Had a whole pack come in but not close enough for a shot. Just got back to cabin to eat and recharge. Then heading back out to try again. Lot of animals out tonight.

Starting setup #2 same area but on a different ridge. Can see about 200 yards on this set.

Didn't update last night, phone was getting low. Did a couple more sits and saw nothing on them. Seems that first sit was the place to be. Sat there for 2 hours and constantly had yotes around us, just couldn't get shots. Ended up stopping around 1, not as easy to stay up late as when I was younger, lol!

I've never been yote hunting. Sounds like you all had fun... at least you had action, even if no dogs were downed.

It was a lot of fun. Crazy to see the amount of animals moving around at night. Didn't realize how effective the red lights were at night. Any animal within 200 yards you could pick up there eye shine. Then just put scope on them and could see them as clear as day to identify them. Already planning a repeat trip this coming week.

Coyotes most of the time will circle to come in downwind of the calling. Setup is the most important thing, much more important than the sounds you use.
Try to setup on an opening and put the electronic call upwind of you about 100 yards. You sit straight downwind from the call. You're trying to create enough room between you and the caller that the coyotes circle downwind of the call but you are even more downwind, so they end up coming in from the sides between you and the call.
If you keep the call right with you, then you want to setup in the center, upwind edge of the opening. You're trying to get your scent stream to go straight through the middle of the opening. They circle downwind of the call and you catch them coming into the opening from the sides, shoot them before they get to the center of the opening and hit your scent stream.

That is basically what we did. We treated it like deer hunting and anticipated them circling down wind. We also setup so they couldn't get down wind in some places that had natural barriers. I think we setup to well if that makes sense. There was no advantage for the coyotes, almost impossible for them to get down wind, so they didn't feel comfortable come out. It was a learning experience. We were close, just going to make a couple small adjustments and try again.

Out shed hunting today and found this rub. Looks darn fresh compared to what I'm used to seeing this time of year. 20220214_104242.jpeg

Had to lock up my brakes right when i left my subdivision this morning. Almost creamed a doe running full steam. Soon as i started to go again a basket rack buck blew past, then another doe. Buck was carrying both sides still.

We often split up. Upwinders/downwinders. The calling/decoying is at a position where the coyotes can circle. The downwinders are positioned to pick them off before they get completely downwind. Man i need to get out havent been in awhile. Work has its noose around me right now though

I'll be headed to NJ Thursday morning for the last 3 days of the season. All I can shoot is a Doe because of the Buck I shot in January. It's more of a scouting trip. I'll be on the ground with the compound checking out several public land pieces in anticipation of next year. I am bringing my portable hang on and climbing sticks just in case I find something really good to hang and hunt. Pretty excited to get to some new ground. I'll take lots of photos and post.

First scouting mission of the day was pretty successful. Good sign, droppings, ribs, tracks. Mix of fields and woods. 7 stands in there, so not alot of thieves apparently. Probably try it on a week day next year. Its 60 and windy here today, so wont be shooting anything today. Road next to the WMA, "Deer Hill Rd" , might be a clue as well. 20220217_132332.jpg 20220217_133406.jpg 20220217_134250.jpg 20220217_134432.jpg

I am always amazed at all the tree stands I see still up during turkey season, South Jersey, guys have stands 50 yds from each other, has to be a war zone, one of the main reasons I will not hunt over there for deer.
