I did something really dumb tonight. Imma make the story short as possible. Every deer I saw today busted me, and blowed at me because of how inconsistent the wind has been. I got really mad when the 4th deer I seen tonight starting blowing non stop, 20 minutes before shooting light was over. So…. In my head I had a bright idea “hey these leaves are really loud and made me bump a deer today, I should just go ahead and get down and clear myself a path to walk for the next time I’m here”. I lower my bag and bow down, and get halfway down my steps. Then a doe runs full steam ahead right to my stand and just sets there for 5 minutes eating acorns, and staring at my bow and backpack. Meanwhile I’m hanging on my steps like a koala bear just staring at her. She eventually ran off blowing because my bow and backpack had her spooked. Lesson learned stay in my stand til shooting light is over Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
At least you learned on a doe! And didn't have to come to that realization on a big Ole gnarly buck! Sent from my SM-G781V using Tapatalk
Think OND is the only one using one regularly. I want to get one like hers, flat HD cardboard ones and come up with a way, string or otherwise, I can stand it up and lay it down from on stand. Think it would be cool to be able to stand it up to try to entice a buck not in the general area, and leave it layed down for general movement/does.
I did in Illinois and so did my buddy he shot a good one over it. I think a lot depends on the deer and the area your hunting.
I have used one of those plastic/cardboard fold-up doe decoys in the past with no luck. but then again i dont think she ever got a real good look either.
She? I've always been under the impression does get skittish around decoys. I bought one a few years ago, sent it right back though, was way too big to carry back and forth to stand and set up each morning.
I was referring to the decoy as "she" lol "she" (decoy) never got a great look at from a buck or any deer for that matter. i dont remember ever seeing a deer when ive used the doe decoy.
Yes, buck and doe, fun young spike, button encounters. It stopped the 8 eight behind me but bad winds had them half tipped over So he continued out..
Gotcha, misread/interpreted it Took it as a doe never really got a good visual on it. I'm just afraid it would muck something up more than anything.
Yeah true. That’s exactly what I was thinking on the way home Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
No worries lol but yeah, Im just thinking if I can get a buck to see the buck/doe decoy from a distance, they may come in for a closer look and into bow range. like on a field edge or something during the rut.
Unfortunately I wasn't as lucky about 7 to 8 years ago. Had the buck I was after come right out and blew at sunset, I never saw him again after that. I made that same mistake. Sent from my SM-G781V using Tapatalk
Dang man. I know that’ll live in your head forever. Non hunters don’t realize the little stories like that is what hunting is about. It hurts and I’m sure you’ll always remember that as long as you live, but it’s a memory made and a lesson that has made you a better hunter. I have a few that haunt me to this day, and I wouldn’t change the outcome of those hunts for the fact they made me a better hunter. I’m sure I’ll be thinking abt them as an old man in my rocking chair. That is if the lord lets me live that long, and the world is still standing Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Yeah for sure. I learnt something last night from BucksnBears. I never thought to check if my Nockturnal is still nocked after drawing my bow. I made sure I did that in the stand today. BnB thank you for teaching me something last night. I know it cost you a buck but it might’ve saved me in the future Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
pretty decent chance I will be out in SW Michigan tomorrow afternoon...think I'm gonna grab the .44 Mag Ruger carbine. She's dead nuts accurate and so light. Wind will be odd SE @ 15mph but that's a perfect still hunt for where I am planning to go. Any legal buck is on the menu and won't count against the BH.com contest that way. Put one in the freezer and then horn hunt the rest of the season.
That’s my go to gun. It’s a pleasure to shoot, accurate and flat out dumps deer. With the hornady leverevolution round. Good luck !
