good luck AM Mid Week October Lull Killers Here in IL about a 20* drop in high temps starts today. Should be good killing weather This is my last full week of work pretty much through the end of the year, next weekend I start wading into the fight.
I got winded just before first light. The breeze is going right to the cut-over behind me and I didn’t expect the deer to be there. I expected them to be going that way from the woods in front of me. Oh well. Guess I should have turned the Ozonics on.
Sorry to hear about your FIL, Glad to hear your wife is feeling better. Worth repeating. 'Treasure every moment you get in the woods and with those you love. This life is too short to not make the most of every opportunity" Amen
Very true, and powerful words. During the season and life in general, it is easy to get caught up in the heat of the hunt/moment and take things for granted. I know personally, I get so caught up in my personal goal of shooting a big public land buck, that I am taking for granted that my dad is still able to be in the woods with me. His balance is getting worse at 75, and it is a struggle for him to get to his old spots. I'm not too sure how many more seasons he'll be able to get out, so I need to enjoy the time I have with him. What really matters are the memories of hunting with him, as opposed to a deer mount on the wall. With him coming in the woods starting next week, I'll be putting my personal goals of going miles in to shoot a big buck to the side, and will be enjoying time with him at the truck and meeting up with him in the woods after a morning hunt. Should there be a day this season he isn't going out, I can focus on myself. Until then, I'll be sticking nearby to share the woods with him.
It’s about 10:00. I haven’t seen a thing during shooting light. I don’t see much point in sitting longer so I had a deer walk in just then. I was getting ready to shoot when I saw a 2” spike on his left side. Now I guess I need to wait for him to clear out.
I wouldn’t have shot that deer because I don’t want to shoot a young buck, but under Missouri regulations it would have counted as an antlerless deer. I’ve often wondered how that applies to the contest. I assume you would go by the laws of the state you’re hunting in. Here in MO it’s an antlerless deer. I believe in Arkansas it would count as an antlered deer. I’m glad He turned and looked straight at me at 15 yards. It let me see the tiny spike so I don’t have to find out.
That's a good question. I have wondered the same thing. Here in maryland it has a 3" or less rule and same, it is considered a antlerless. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
I think it's what ever you can use an antlerless deer tag on in your state is considered a doe in the contest. 3" or less rule in MI as well
I agree, that would be my take on it also. Kind of surprised it never came up all these years that the contest has been going. I did shoot a little spike last year and entered it as my buck. I was happy with my 50 pt Fergie buck! Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
To be a buck/antlered deer in Indiana it has to have one horn exceeding 3 inches long. Everything else is checked as antler-less.
Been discussed before, if it's deemed antlerless by your states regulations it is an antlerless entry. If you have to use a buck/either sex tag it is antlered. 3" on one side here as well.
In Arkansas, two inches or less is tagged as a button buck. Whether or not it counts against your two buck statewide limit depends on where you hunt. In the deer region that Wattensaw is in, a button buck would count against your two buck limit. The WMAs that I hunt near Little Rock, a button buck does not. It is a weird rule but it comes down to combination of overall deer population and on some WMAs, like Wattensaw, whether or not it is being managed for higher age structure and quality. Not sure what the reg is for the area around your brother's place. You would have to check on that if you hunt there.
Fergs buck was just before I joined... Might be a good reference. Imho Fergie clause clarification could be good here...so as to qualify, if another buck could be entered.
