Bet that makes for some fun sits... I am hoping I still get to get out there this weekend. My cars transmission just decided to go out, so family is down to 1 vehicle. Luckily that's the vehicle we travel with so plans are still a go, just hate not having a backup plan. My brother in law has informed me that our big target buck is still pretty regular, even after his big mishap opening weekend where he shot at it with his xbow, and the arms of the xbow smacked the frame of the bow blind he was sitting in. Went off like a small bomb and the deer scattered. That happened Saturday morning. He was out this am and saw our shooter back but he was just out of range for his scope. Hoping he holds off for me, so I can get a crack at him...assuming he shows up when i get down there.
That is always a huge factor with any archery equipment, clearance for the limbs. I have missed a buck before because my limb smacked my seat. From that point I will never take a shot from a seated position. But with a crossbow probably better to be seated. It's really a problem when I hunt with my longbow, that thing is 64" long, very hard to shoot from a stand. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
So been trying to research it, but haven't found exactly what I am looking for. If shooting from an elevated position (say 15 feet up), what should I expect with regard to sight pins and distances? I have range finder and my zero pin (top pin) is set for 15 yds...so if one is elevated to 5 yds, deer is 20 yds out, would that 5 yd drop be enough to have to use the 15 pin on target, or do you still treat it like a 20 yd. shot?
At 15 feet high not much will change. Most range finders have a angle adjustment built in. If not you can always range something that is same height as you at the distance you want to shoot. For example if a deer comes in and is standing next to a tree. You can range the tree 15 feet off the ground. That gives your pin distance. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Yes that is correct. I will pre distance all possible lanes when I get on stand. That way when a deer comes in your not rushing to get a range on him before the shot. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
I knew to do the pre-ranging before hand. As well as trying to wait for sweet spot shots. Right now stand I will be sitting in first is about 22 yds from sweet spot. But deer gather in and around that area anywhere from 10 yds. to 60 yds. out. As of right now I am not planning to shoot at anything beyond 35 yds, especially since this is my first time. But if I am feeling comfortable, and my morning practice shots feel good, I might push that out to 45 yds. Here is where my first sit will be: (the back end of that yellow zone is 60 yds...ish)
Shooting at a deer over 40 yards is a dangerous game. Something to think about is most deer coming to a feeder are on edge and very jumpy. Me personally I wouldn't shoot over 25 yards at a feeder. These are things you will learn as a new archer. Deer at 25 yards are my worst for things that go wrong. That seems to be the range that deer start to jump the string for me. I would guess 90 percent of the deer I have killed have been 15 yards or less, that's the sweet zone for me. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

From personal experience I would agree with Holt on this. My nerves get too worked up so I try to limit myself to 30 yards or under. Prefer 20 or less. I wouldn’t personally take a shot over 30 yards until you have drawn back on a deer and taken a couple with the bow. It’s a whole different ball game when shooting a deer compared to shooting a target. I practice at 40 but it’s to make the 30 and under shots seem easier

Came up with 136" Gross/ 130 3/8" Net for my 11 point. I'll be putting it on the score page this morning. I think that will put us in the top 3 for a short time! Story is crazy how it all unfolded and I'll share it when I can sit down and process it all. Even though there are bigger ones around I couldn't pass him up after the encounter!
