Vacation is over, spent today getting the house in order and floating in the pool. Might try to get some cameras out tomorrow, but there’s a higher chance of floating in the pool. Wife is supposed to have a pool party next weekend, that’ll be my big day to get as much stand work as I can ready for October. I should probably shoot my bow…it’s been a while.
Fellas...I might do something silly this season; no trail cameras. Over the past two years I let a lot of deer walk waiting for #1, I also would get stuck to a spot because of pictures. So, this year, I think I'm going to leave them at home, or just set them on the field edge just to watch. I need to get back to relying on my memory from past hunts and current year scouting, I think it'll get me out of that rut and into new spots and keep me from walking around checking cameras prior to season. It's going to be hard not knowing what's out there, but I really believe I need to take a step back to the basics. Season Update: I am not buying an Illinois tag this year, I may buy a KY tag though. My hunting partner is slammed with his business because he can't find anyone willing to work, so he cannot plan. It's fine with me, I'm not upset and it wouldn't hurt to take a year off of that place. I'll still be hammering this spot in TN, going to trim some lanes and set some preset sticks out in the "hot" zones. Also, going to do some walking around hopefully stumbling into something I've missed from seasons past.
I only own two trail cameras and one of those was dead when I pulled them out yesterday so I’m down to one. I’ve never really used cameras enough to rely on them anyway. By the way, how far are you from Van Buren, MO?

A $225 Non-resident archery license is all you need. If you decide to do this I’d recommend downloading the Missouri Hunting App and using that.
Probably a smart idea. I should do the same. My reason a little different though. I usually hunt them spots regardless if the camera is there or not. So I shouldn’t waste time getting in and out but it’s like Christmas checking cards I can’t help it.
Oh man!!! I'm way to addicted to looking at pictures to do that to myself haha... I think I'm sitting at 40 something cameras right now between three properties, plus some public cheapies. I do miss the not knowing what was out there though (typing this as I look through my daily cell cam pics haha)
It's already killing me and I don't have as single camera out yet, the whole fear of missing out thing. But I know it kept me from shooting a really good 8pt a few years ago because I was so hung up on a single buck. Maybe later in season I'll put a few out after I get some live from the stand data, I have a tendency to leave them in summer patterns and never move them to fall/winter, it's a huge hinderance.
I haven't went without...BUT...I bet my frequency of checking cameras has plummetted tenfold in the last three years. Just nothing really gained from the intrusion in the short term to make it worth it IMO. Tendencies and intel mapped out and chronicled for buck movements start to become valuable as you stack years of intel so I find myself usually checking cams post velvet in June/July once, followed by only when I'm out doing stand or plot work (and only the cams that are on the way only) and then maybe mid-september. After that it is only when tracking or dragging a deer out, known trespassing issues/suspicions or requested by a landowner until Thanksgiving-Christmas time frame will have another check to see majority of survivors that may be worth chasing late season.
That's actually another reason I've went to external battery packs like Browning offers. 8 additional lithiums plugged into the cam make those freaking things last longer than my card space does (started buying nothing smaller than 16 GB lately and try to nab 32s whenever possible even.
