Umm, just because someone throws a can in the fire to watch it melt does not mean they will then run around wildly, pissing on everything in sight and then throw trash anywhere like an untrained toddler. Unless perhaps they are untrained toddlers.

At least the people I associate with don't do that. I've had people (my sons friends etc.) Camp on my land for a weekend or two and they were very respectful and policed their trash. Yeah, they threw a few cans in the fire but all in all it was a good time. They are welcome back any time.

    Spoken like a NY male...LOL...
In all honestly the cans in the fire pit really isn't an issue here...a deposit is a deposit even for the pigs...the rest I have seen happen at gatherings from friends to acquaintances out door gatherings. I'm still finding trash from our daughters grad party and she's 38.

I am sure all will be courteous and polite, thing is you get a group of 6 or more there is always at least 1 idiot, there is nothing more problematic than a motivated idiot. If you do not like the rigid rules of properly disposing of beer cans f off go back to the city feel free to never come back I will not miss you.

I had the same issue with. Smoking. You don't smoke around me and NEVER IN MY HOISE OR CAR. I started finding butts on drive way. Put up a sign. Drive is not a ash tray. If you need one stay home and use yours. Thank YOU

The solution to cans in the fire pit is obvious... A kegerator and cups.

Waiting for anything you purchased, almost a year ago, after going through an application process and put up the money. Whether it be suppressors, a car or a home. Seems like I have more money out on purchases that I am still waiting on than I owe any creditor, bizzaro world.

I'll add to that and @Sota has probably already had the thought... Names on the cups really help single out the idiots.

Ha ha, you really want to up the amount of people that already want to come to your lake property...install a kegerator!
Let me know how the "honor" system charge per cup turns out.
And how much help is offered in replacing the firewood.

I had no idea this would spark such controversy and conversation.
We actually burn our cans up in WI because except for later in October until April, the damn yellowjackets and bald-faced hornets would swarm all the empty cans/bags of cans and we got sick of getting chased around and stung. Then my buddy (owns the property) was up there by himself and got stung and had a reaction and passed out. Woke up over an hour later. He easily could have died.

Thus, we throw all the cans in the firepit and in the evenings (or before if we start a fire) just burn them all. Doesn't eliminate the risk but does reduce it. Those bald-faced hornets are some savage bastards.

Really? How many did you have in you when you hit the post reply button?

They melt into small fines and settle into whatever base is in the pit. If it's fine gravel, it doesn't take much to affect the drainage of the pit.

I don't know what a small fine is other than a toll violation, but looks like ash to me. Never forms a liquid, it ends up turning into a papery type substance then just effectively disintegrates like carboard.

I dunno, we shovel out the pit about once every 2 years. It's over sand (WI sand country.) And we burn up a helluva lot of cans in there per year.
