I think we need one of these threads so we can share our pain. So I was enjoying the 3rd day of my 4 days off this morning. The wife ask me what we should do today. Like a dumb arse I asked her what she wanted to do. She thought we should go to town and buy a new couch. I said no cause I like the old couch. She said ok. Dodged that bullet. She then thought we should rip up the carpet in the dining room. I said no knowing full well what that meant. The carpet starts in the living room, goes through the dining room and ends in the office. You can't just rip up part of it. She reminded me the previous owner said there was beautiful hard wood floor under the carpet. I said bull the house is 114 years old. There is a reason why he had it carpeted. She said let's do it anyways. I craved. This is her calling for more vinyl flooring cause the beautiful hardwood floor is not so beautiful anymore and my supply of vinyl flooring was not going to cover it all. This is her big dining room table that she filled twice with all her knick knacks so we could move her stuff around with out getting a hernia. This is more of her stuff. My undocumented worker puked out on me at 12:30 tonight. The wife decided she had enough 15 minutes later. I am still rearing to go but I have a 50 gallon fish tank in my way. So that ends the first day.
I will say who ever put the carpet in 35 years ago really did a great job. Also you can see the next project. The old paneling has to go !! I know what's under it and it isn't going to be fun. Throw in glass bead insulation on the outside wall and it could be a disaster !!
I know your pain. I went through something similar a couple of weeks ago. My wife wanted to re-do some things in our bar and one of them was to fix the leaking bar sink. It is a 4 basin sink and all 4 drains had dried out gaskets and two had rusted out retaining nuts. After a shopping trip to two different towns I finally had all of the parts I needed. When I got back, the wife decided that since a couple of the vinyl tiles were loose, we should tear them all out and get new ones. That led to finding part of the subfloor being rotted out. Grrrr, this just keeps getting better and better. Half a sheet of plywood (thank God a whole sheet wasn't needed at that price!) and some new tiles later, everything was done and put back in place. Oh yeah, there was a "I think we should paint this" thrown in there as well. The half an hour job only took about a week. Good luck with the rest of your project.
Hardest part of those projects is moving the stuff around to work! We just had our hot water tank go on us when we’re out for the weekend , came home to a flooded basement, all carpet is ruined in bar room and living room. Getting carpet installed the 25th, but of course now was time to change the tile that was behind the bar.(wife didn’t like the tile I originally put in anymore) so after leveling and sanding the floor 2x it still wasn’t perfect but was able to get the tile laid pretty good. Then to boot we had to clean absolutely every can, bottle and item in the room and around the bar bc of the sanding. It isn’t ever easy. I still have to trim out around the tile but it will be ready for the 25th. O ya and I put in a new hot water tank and had to re plumb the gas and water lines bc the previous owner had it setup like an ass. Cheers to owning a home haha.
I so do not miss being still on the ranch. I hated working on that house, nothing was true or level or even done properly when the house was built and each addition done. Every single project took twice as long as expected.
I swear the guy that owned the house b4 us did the stupidest stuff, it doesn’t even make sense some of the way things are setup and the wiring to some switches and lights I ran into made me cringe so I went around and changed out all outlets and switches. I did this when we first moved in 4 yrs ago.
Where would this be? I get around the country a bit, hotels, restaurants, convention centers etc, never see an upside down outlet.
Illinois. I learned of it when talking to electricians who performed work in Illinois. That was a while ago and I'm not sure if it has changed. It may have been only for commercial and/or industrial applications. The reason was that if a plug was not plugged all the way in, and something metal fell on it (paper clip), there would be less chance of an arc that could possibly start a fire. I love my old house. Having been built in 1919 they built it, well. However, I have about a bakers dozen stories that start with a "I thought it was going to be a simple project but..." I have over the years become and expert repairman of lath and plaster, had I known how much of it I was going to repair I would have torn it all out on day one. Replaced all the old cloth wrapped wiring, plumbing and remodeled the kitchen and bathrooms entirely wall to wall, floor to ceiling. The Pecan wood floors are original and had them refinished 10 years ago. My only complaint would be having to get approval from a Historic Preservation Commission that is made up of trust fund brats that never earned a dollar in their life and do not appreciate how hard the wife and I work for ours. But we decided a couple years back to build a new more modern home, so 31% percent above projected cost and two years later we might be in our new home by Christmas...
We are a little over half done. Now to move her furniture over to the other side and finishing ripping out the little bit of carpet left. I am beat. She is beat. The knees are done. It is turning out pretty nice though. Hoping work hours get a little better so I can pick away at it a couple hours in the evenings. Want to be done with it before next weekend so I can rest !!
It’s what I do for a living and Indiana’s code is like this. It was explained to me that if a plug was pulled out of the receptacle just a little, that the ground was more likely the first prong you would come in contact with. I think there were Karen’s making stupid rules long before that term became popular. If you don’t want to get shocked then keep your paws out of the socket!
Living room and dining room are done. Office is left but that is not happening now. The knees said they had enough !! Oh and now she added the back entryway to the list of needing to be vinyl floored. I added to the list off things she needed to get done. Homemade rhubarb cake or no more flooring.
That god awful paneling needs to go. It really clashes with the new flooring and not in a good way. Also need to strip all the wood work. The owner before painted it and should have been hung for that crime !! Always have hated it.
