Went out today to a spot that normally holds a nice flock (30-50 birds) only to find a pack of coyotes hunting the meadow.......Bummer.
looking at a new location. Sorrows of a southern CA hunter. Did pick up a new predator call on the way home though

I've been out the last 2 mornings. Lots of distant gobbling but haven't laid eyes on a strutter yet. Saw about 10-15 Jake's and hens yesterday but nothing this morning. Didn't even plan on hunting turkeys this year because it didn't really peak my interest last year. I must say that I'm having a lot of fun and it's great to get out and enjoy watching the world wake up.

Maine spring Turkey season starts May 3rd. Taking that week off, we had a mild winter and there are tons of turkeys this year. I've taken turkeys with my crossbow, but this year I'm going to use my htr. Can't wait!!!! Good luck everyone

Went out for a few hrs Sat... Didn't hear a bird. Worse, heard a woodpecker and squirrel that I thought were birds clucking/working through the woods.

    Called in 1 other hunter...

I'll be hunting a different parcel next time.

I'll be out next Saturday a.m. I've seen a,few around our place and they've been bugging the usual wooded areas. Lots of beetles to be had. The crickets haven't hatched yet but we always have a huge one in our woods. The ground literally moves infront of you when it happens. Only a couple of long beards seen and a gang of Jake's have been in the field next door. Too sick to listen for shots this youth season. They were out though because cars were at a few surrounding camps near us when I came back from getting vaccine.

I thought this thread would be busier by now
I call using my natural voice but like a slate or box call to have the ability to sound like multiple birds. The box is mainly for gobbling with a Jake decoy. I've brought in a few hung up Tom's with this technique. So I bought a new slate the other day having cracked my 20 yr old one.

Season opens Saturday , here I sit in usual go to blind. I have 2 areas I want to check for morning fly downs and movement.. Right at first light don't I have 3 guys on the new hunt camp along my northeast boarder owl hooting. 1 at top , 1 in the middle and 1 one the lower end. Well they struck up birds on me. At least 3 over ridge and by streams the other 2 I walked under to get to blind. Opener ought to be interesting. I miss the good old days when I had 3 less "camps" to deal with. Now I wait, listen and watch. I hear hens over the ridge.
Looking around they have been doing their usual scratching around the blind. Beetles and anenomies. Not sure if they eat the trout lily as well.. Think those Tom's between me and house hit the farmers clover field. Time to slip back home for coffee before the long drive to get seed and innoculants. So I was right they were in the clover field and not far from the house. I picked the right trail to get home. Couldn't get close enough to get a pic but caught a pic of a very pretty red newrt.
