Being a relative noob to turkey hunting (starting my 2nd year) I have two questions for the turkey hunting public... 1) When do jakes stop being jakes? ..when are.they considered toms vs. juveniles? 2) when do their beards start to really get long & how fast do they grow? It's 5;46 a.m. and I'm standing in my back yard/field waiting to leave for work and I can hear at least 6 different gobbles going on all around me ... can't wait for May 1st !! Male bird 1 year old or less, Jake, beard usually 6" or less, spurs 3/8th" or less, tail feathers un even, 2 or 4 middle tail fan feathers longer. Beards are a crap shoot, Toms get beard rot, ice will cause it to break off, and genetics' and food affect beard length. Look up "wild turkey doc" Dr. Mike Chamberlain, answers to all your questions.
