Yep. Four days of driving (if we’re lucky) since they have two dogs. I’m really not looking forward to it but I know I should just make the best of it and enjoy the time with my daughter.
Bummer. I ruined both of my son's on turkey hunting. I made them sit too long in poor conditions and sucked all the fun out of it for them. Now they would rather fish in the Spring. I hate that I did that. Just a word of caution for all of you that may take youth hunters out.
I was worried about him losing interest, but he kept saying he was fine. I think I lost patience quicker than he did, I'm going to have him come back in a few weeks and give it another shot. It's hard to "educate" someone about hunting when there isn't much to go on, I gave the basics, btu would have liked to run and gun/teach him as we go. I was actually more excited taking him out than I have been about myself getting a bird, and damn it, I'm going to make it happen. My 5 year old even asked if he could go, I'll take him out but let him dictate how long we stay, I don't want to ruin it for him (me for future father /son hunting trips).
You are smarter than I was. Mine would complain about getting wet or cold or bored and I would always say, "just one more hour." I so wish I would have just packed up and headed for the truck as soon as they wanted. One of my biggest regrets. I guess the good news is, they will both jump in the boat with me and go fishing. So, all is not lost.
My daughter still seems interested in hunting I just need to do my part to get her on a bird. Still got another month to go before season starts. My son loves to cut wood so I take him every time we go move tree stand. He brings his hand saw and a small hatchet and I turn him loose. He just turned 12 a couple months ago. Sometimes he initial doesn’t want to go but once we’re out there it’s hard to get him to want to come back in. We have put on quite a few miles the past 2 weekends scouting. Trying to break up the electronic time is a full time job.
I’m beat. Primarily because I’m out of shape. What the wife said would be two miles of leaf blowing in the section of the Ozark Trail she adopted turned out to be closer to four miles. The switchbacks on the big hills almost did me in. I should do this more often to get ready for deer season. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Johnny that looks like work! Why do the leaves need to be off the trail? I'm jealous of you guys bass fishing, turkey hunting, walking around in tee shirts. Still frost in the ground here, ice on the lakes, snowed the other day. Most years I tap trees and make maple syrup for my kids and my brother and sisters family's. Still have 8 gallons left from last year, trees and I get a break this year. Good luck with the turkey hunting!
To be honest I have no idea. I suppose it makes the trail easier to follow once all the trees leaf out. It also uncovers the rocks and tree roots that could twist an ankle I guess. All I know is my wife wanted to do it and I volunteered to help (like a dummy).
Wives have a way of turning us all into dummies to get what they want. You should check with the Conservation department or Forest Service and see if they can do a prescribed burn and get rid off all the leaves that way.
This is our family camp for the weekend. The first weekend of April is a family tradition to go camping and go find the wild horses.
