For those who film on a more regular basis. Is it a better idea to run a mic into the mic port on the camera, or run separate audio through a recorder and sync later in post? ill provide camera and mic names if you need that to answer thequestion.
It honestly all depends on your camera and its pre-amps. Arguably, you will get a cleaner audio recording on a recorder with quality mic. You can generally do more with it as well if you want to get down to real technical stuff. All that being said, I hardly ever use my audio recorder, other than if I am just out running around and collect quality ambient sounds to use in a project, or maybe voiceover. I generally use either one of my shotgun mics or a wireless system and record right to the camera. For most of us that simply do projects that will never see a Bad Lands big screen, that is generally good enough.
