Anybody ever bow fish in a dark house? Does that not sound fun put out a decoy or live bait and shoot northerns?
I've never used an ice saw but several buddies use them. Seem to really like them but you still need to punch out the corners with an auger I believe. I've chainsaws many holes. Hate it! Get wet and often a gas/oil slick in the hole..
Looking at a quality ice saw on the e-bay probably will do most pike fishing early in the season when the ice is 12" or a little over.
I am going to base my bid on e-bay on what one from there would cost. Big fan of buying as local as possible.
Been on my to do list for a couple of years now on the local river with carp. Have yet to do it because messing around with the river in the winter without someone else that knows what they are doing isn't on my list of things I want to do right now.
Working on my recipe for dinner after fishing pike all day, shut it down when the sun sets or before. Going with pike backstraps cooked like poor man's lobster , fried mashed potato balls, my secret sauce coleslaw with bacon in it. Might make some venison medallions to do a surf and turf with it.
Jake Travis? Hell even Bucks and Bears come fish and break bread and take northerns out so the walleye can grow. 10 a day within the slot size.
I was just thinking, you might want to check regulations for what size hole you can cut for spear fishing. I'd imagine there are safety concerns for a big hole cut in the ice. Perhaps some sort of marking regulations at least, so someone else doesn't come along after it has thinly froze over and put a skiff of snow on it so they don't see it and fall through. Perhaps you already know them, but thought I'd bring it up.
All spear holes are required to be marked when you leave. We used to live on a small lake and on my way to our fish house I fell through a spearing hole that wasn't marked. Went to my neck but luckily caught myself on the ice and was able to get back safely. Red Lake is allowing people to walk out starting this week. I may or may not be getting up there. Haven't decided yet.
You are required to mark the hole most people use a tree branch, slide the ice you cut back in the hole and mark it.
The bay gets some ice on it and it melts the next day, this morning the bay and some of the lake has ice on it but the wind will take it out.
Saw this thread for the first time just now. Sota, you wont regret an ice saw especially if your plan is mostly early ice. They literally cut ice like butter, let the saw do the work. I spear out of a hub a fair amount, bring a clean rug or something to put near the hole (dirt will get in the water) as when you get the heater going it gets slippery quick.
Next question, the house is fabric with 2 layers and insulated what heater would you recommend? Is the mister buddy that can use the 1 pound bottle as well as hose hook up to a 25 pound bottle a good one?
That is the same set up I have, I suggest the adaptor and 25 pound tank. On cold days you can burn through 3-4 1#'ers pretty easy.
I can get 25 pound bottles filled very cheap at the country store my daughter manages. I can get a 25 filled for the price of 2 1 pound bottles but early season I will be walking on so do not want to lug a 25 pound bottle.
