Been here just waiting until 7:00a.m. Already hear deer moving wish they weren’t up so early or would’ve took more time feeding in the stubble corn. We will see what plays out can’t shoot until 7 fingers are crossed. At least the deer below me in the creek sound small... in quarantine for two weeks so light as well stay at the hunting shack and it’s a 400yd walk to the blind works for me... gonna give the spot a break and public land some stuff 20 minutes north or me for the next two days I hope to turn up a nice one before the week comes to an end. Passed two already that were high 120s this year hoping for a big one but that’s why they call it hunting because you never know
Long Post: Unfortunately no arrow was sent downrange this weekend for me but it was action packed. My father, a friend(very new to bowhunting) and I went out to hunt south western WI for the weekend. My friend and I hunted a public piece of property that I have never hunted. Was looking at onX and dropped some pins of places that I wanted to check out and possibly hunt. Got out there friday night so we would be going in on Saturday with stands on our backs to set up in the dark. I decided to hike all the way down the ridge into the bottom and set up with a river to my back. My friend was on one of the ridge tops at the end of the point. Opening morning I had a nicer 8 pointer come into 60 yards but the winds were swirling and he knew something was wrong. Ended up heading back from where he came from. That's all I saw that morning but my friend had 3 bucks chasing a doe all around him. He ended up getting a easy shot at the 8 pointer but unfortunately his shot was far back and only got guts. It was not a good situation with how warm it was going to be all weekend. We did not go after him after confirming the shot with the arrow. As we were backing out we randomly found some drops of blood along the field edge 300 yards away but only for 20 yards. This was the only blood that we found. Monday morning we spend awhile just searching for a body but did not come up with anything. He took it pretty hard. It would have been his biggest buck and his first deer with a bow. Sucks all the way around. That afternoon I hunted his stand on the ridge point. Had some of the craziest rut action I have ever seen. Only 60 yards away 3 bucks, a very small 6, a big 8 and a beautiful typical chocolate 10 where chasing a doe in a circuit. The big 10 would chase off the other 2 bucks and then start chasing the doe again. Eventually he must have chased the other bucks off over the hill and the doe bedded down because he just stood there at 60 yards for the longest time. The doe got up and they moved off. Never came closer than 50 yards from me. Then an hour later, the 6 and 8 pointer shows up again chasing another doe. Again they ran all over but never by me. They came running by at 30 yards twice but I couldn't stop the 8 pointer. I actually watch the big 8 breed that doe which was a first for me. I cant believe with all that chasing that I did not get a shot. Then comes Sunday morning, the real heart breaker. About 8:15 a doe popped up at 60 yards from the side of the hill and I could tell she was being followed. What was following her was the biggest buck I've seen while hunting! Now he was not a giant, but a quick glance at him and its a no doubter. Big 10, bigger than yesterdays 10 and that deer was very nice. She turns down the trail that leads 17 yards right past my stand. All I need her to do is walk though and Id get my shot. Once she gets to my opening though she turns right towards me for a few yards then looks right at me. She knows something is up, but she turns and continues on through my openings. Perfect. at this point the buck is at 25 yards and 5 yards from my lane. But unfortunately the wind must have swirled ever so slightly and she blew but didn't run off. But the buck sure jumped out of his shoes and made a half circle away from me. She then ran and the buck after her. He came through at 30 and I yelled but could not stop him. So so so close. I cant stop thinking about it. If this happened on a deer that was nice and a shooter ok, but the biggest buck to date, it just sucks. So that's my excitement so far. It was fun but I feel we should have had 2 dead bucks if things went just a little differently.
Cameras are picking up a lot of daytime activity. I've been sitting in the right place at the wrong time... paying my dues... -fsh
Each property I hunt I have couple big bucks ran around. Too bad I don’t have much time to hunt. Sunday is my last day to hunt, I shot small 14 points buck, normally I will pass him but this time I don’t want pass him then I am going to get divorce, and at least I got some points for our team. Bad day for me I drove home on Sunday night after tag out, a 8 point jumped out in front my truck. My truck got towed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
