I had an interesting night last night. I saw a couple deer through the leaves in the unpicked bean field. Around 6, I hear a deer running towards me. The doe is on a full out sprint and has blood a little back and high on her right side. A while later a red truck drives back on the neighbors. I use "OnX" to find the neighbors name, called him, and he called the hunter to inform her I saw her doe run by and where to start tracking it. It ended up being a fabulous couple I met this spring, in their late 60s. Jon gave me some lumber to help me with wooden counter tops. His wife, Ester, loves deer hunting and Jon only turkey hunts. At 630 I got out of my tree (missing the last hour of hunting) while they walked over through a light drizzle. I got on the tracks in a chopped corn field to look for blood while it was still light - but there was not much. We never found it. The farmer and 2 of his kids came out to help track (I'm glad they did, they were helpful and are getting more and more into hunting and I wanted to teach them about tracking). When we finally gave up at 930, our last blood about a half mile from impact. Normally I would have waited 3 hours to track it, but with the rain, I felt we needed to stay on the trail before it was washed away. Jon is going to look for the deer this morning, in a great bedding area. I think years ago, I would have reacted differently given the same scenario - I would have been upset about missing the last hour of hunting and someone trekking through bedding area. I don't know if it is age or perspective that has changed me...probably both. I truly had fun last night tracking the deer. The hunting community is shrinking and we have to band together and build each other up. I think this forum does a great job of this. YOU are quick to help and quick to encourage when shots go stray. I planned on hunting tonight... But I hand wash my hunting clothes in scent free soap since our washer is newer and doesn't allow you to just dump whatever soap you want in. I didn't plan on my clothes taking this long to dry for how wet they are. At the rate they are going I don't know if they will be dry in 3 hours when it's time to hit the stand.
