No luck this weekend, I had a spike come by me at 20 last night, this afternoon we had high winds so I did some scouting. I didn't find anything that told me these guys were living in the areas that I scouted but I did see some sign. I think that these deer being on camera within 2 hours of daylight they are probably bedding 500-800 yards from the food source... anyone have experience with this? these pictures are taken in a larger food plot on our property. A couple acres of beans and then I over seeded with a fall mix, so there other stuff in addition to the beans that are now yellow. Our neighbors had 50 acres of beans that they cut 2+ weeks ago and there is no other ag for a few miles. Excited for the coming weeks!

We have had a few goiter bucks in the day. They were usually on the neck or brisket. I’ll see if I can round up any pictures.

That's what I thought also. Wonder if he got gored/partially disembowled. Hopefully you get him on the ground and can do an autopsy!

Yes, we can grow big bodies here, but usually not huge racks. Though that's a pretty good one for around here. Super rare to get a 10pt in this area.

Had a little long range fun last night. Thought the video was cool so I figured I would share.

If you are hunting this weekend drop and note.
I have a wedding tomorrow so I will be out Sunday evening, we have an expected 15mph west wind that will allow me to get pretty close to some swamp bedding.

Good luck bud. Hard to beat a September opener, deer have a good chance to still be on a summer-ish routine.

    Bigguns!

Sunday I will start packing. Heading up to camp Tuesday. Opening day is Thursday. Give me all day Wednesday to shoot a bit, shoot the s4it, and cruise around the area to see what the crops are looking like. My cousin was up there last weekend said the acorns are going to be thick so I am hoping a little grove near a swamp is going to get hit in daylight.

inside the red is public. Inside the purple is the swamp. Aqua square to the South is our camp. Yellow is the oak grove. Access will br the very SE corner of the public. There's a little pull in and I will walk the fence line all the way straight north.

My only thing is- assuming the wind is N/NW @ 10mph as predicted, would you try that opening AM or hold that spot until the afternoon? Moon is going to be full so directly underfoot at 12:50PM...oh yeah- supposed to be 35 in the AM and a high of only 50.

Right now I am thinking an AM hunt on a different parcel with a little still hunting stalk/scout action, then ghost in on this one about noon. I will be leaving my truck at the parking spot for this one though as I want anyone cruising by to think it's taken.

Whattya guys think? Try that spot in both AM and PM or just save it for the PM? I have hunted all over those parcels except this area in yellow and I have no idea why other than I got married to my old spots...which is probably why I haven't shot a mature buck here in 12 years of hunting in the area.

Just my 2 cents on this one, without knowing the area. I like the temp drop and the acorns if they're on the ground. Depending on what is beyond the public boundary, if those oaks extend a bunch out past the public line, etc...But if you think you can not get busted with the wind direction, I would sit my butt on those oaks both morning and evening. Keep it simple, and those cooler temps will drive the deer movement more than the moon imo.

I think you are safe going in in the AM with a n/nw wind. If you are a morning guy I’d say go for it

I'm not saying you're wrong, but the moon doesn't set until 6:21 AM...depending on cloud cover it will be light on my walk in no matter what (to a deer.) I hate to push that area walking in in the pre dawn light and blow them out. There's a lot of oaks scattered around in that hardwood, but that area in particular is a grove right on the edge of the swamp.

If it's cloudy, no problem. Assuming the wind is as predicted it will be a huge bonus- in my face the entire walk in.
