I hear of people talking about blowing through both shoulders on deer. In my 30 years I have hit 2 deer in the "scapula" the hard bone plate. It did not go well for me. Who here has actually penetrated one or both and made a kill? Not the cartilage surrounding the shoulder but the scapula. It seems like it would be hard to bust through.
Check out Ranch Fairy on Youtube, the people that can do that are using heavy arrows with single bevel broadheads. I am trying this for the first time this season so I cannot offer a personal perspective, but the evidence he puts out is compelling.
I have once on a small buck. On a scape under me at 5 yards quartering towards me, put the arrow through the front scapula and out low behind the opposite shoulder. 430 grain arrow, FMJ tipped with a G5 Stryker shooting 65lbs. Definitely did the job but I don’t think a mature buck at 5 yards would stand there and watch me draw as he did.
Front side shoulder blade. Not centered but she was quartering to me at 36 yds. Complete pass through with no deflection and the arrow stuck in the ground afterwards. Mature doe. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
I personally have done it more than once on mature does. Once in Nebraska while hunting from a saddle about 20 years ago and a couple of times on my own places. I was shooting 70 lbs with heavy arrows tipped with 3 blade muzzy. The old school Muzzy. I am not confident that today's muzzy would do that same. They seem to be less durable. I punched through the shoulder blade on a 3.5 yr old buck about 12 years ago and got just enough penetration to reach the heart. I heard the CRACK and saw the poor penetration and thought I had screwed up badly. Then the deer dropped after about three bounds and I realized how lucky I was. These were all centered scapula hits. I dont think any head will go through the heavy leg bone or the "T" portion of the shoulder.
I've done it more than once also on mature does. I've never hit the scapula on a buck. I shoot 530 grain arrows tipped with Slick Tricks. Right after I switched to Slick Tricks I shot one mature doe and hit her in the scapula. The arrow blew through the scapula, through the lungs, hit the off side front leg, broke that leg bone and the arrow was laying on the ground after the shot. I was shooting 70# then. It did break one blade off the Slick Trick and bent another.
I've killed a few and not with a heavy set up. I think I posted a pick of a doe I shot with my old Hoyt. It drops them in their tract but doesn't necessarily kill them with out a follow up shot. Hit the nerve blood vessel bundle and one isn't needed. Pain in the neck because if it doesn't go completely through,getting the arroe out can be tricky. All mine have been mature doe. Not a shot I recommend but ****e happens
I did it on a large bodied buck the not a pass thru but the rage made it thru both blades. Sounded like I hit him with a hammer he went down when I hit him and I was sick when he ran off. I found him 100 yards away, after waiting thru a 2 hour down pour no blood. It was a relief will never be able to explain. I was shooting my 340 destroyer with a carbon express piledriver. 73# DW 29.5" DL. Piece of crap rage titanium had bend blades and the ferrel was bent.
I have a legit question if shooting a human with a bow and arrow do you have to wait for a facing or back to me shot? Is a side profile shot ethical? Asking for a friend.
I killed a buck 2 seasons ago. Drove through shoulder blade and through offside cartilage. As the buck ran away the arrow was sticking out of him. It caught a tree and ripped the rest of the way out. 300 ish grain arrow with 125 grain slick trick. Total of 430 + or - grains
