Yup any time after 5:30 deer can start moving. Already been hearing some splashing and birds going off down in the marsh. Only matter of time

Anterless reduction zone so only chance to shoot a buck must follow an antlerless.

Moving early in WI despite 75 and windy. Doe came to 22 yards but fawns were small yet. First sit of the year after working all weekend.

Little buck just walked by at 40 yards. He didn't use the funnel and just climbed the bank. Go figure

Well I'm calling it early. After about 6-7 miles of some crazy terrain: burns blow down, dry landscape, [IMG] and many marked spots ending up with no sign, I did find water, 1 bed and some fresh elk scat... But no elk.

It was so dry, I opted to leave the gaiters on the car. A mistake. [IMG]

Around 5 or 6 miles in (yes I said 3 was my limit, but theres snow), I did see 2 Mule does (47yds,the other already had taken off). [IMG]
I pushed to another crushing spot I had marked 7 or 8 miles in and was feeling pretty discouraged, legs and back getting tight, so I started back.

Spotted a couple grouse and had to do a double take. Took a shot, but zipped right under the beast. It ran off, I recovered that arrow and missed a second shot low around 30...it flew off, so I know I just grazed it.

That, at least, lifted my spirits. Continuing down the trail, totally oblivious and looking at horse tracks, which I was trying to deduce of they were riders or pack animals. I missed the clue the wind was blowing down the mountain (afternoon thermal should've been carrying it up) and was startled by some ruckus. I walked over to the source of the noise and found fresh elk sign and tracks in the snow.

    ****....

Stuck a doe. 9 deer seen so far. Pretty sure she’s down. Waiting on a buck now. She didn’t make too much racket so didn’t screw anything up with how windy it is I don’t think.

    Literally. 20200915_152451.jpeg

I moved into the woods and by good fortune, quietly, and hunkered down behind a berm of dirt. Scanning. And then the barking starts. Just like a deer blowing, the jig is up. But I recalled the bark is an order to 'show yourself'...I had just secured my bugle time to the pack, but quick thinking, I let out some cow chirps. He barked, I chirped. For about 2 minutes. Then I stopped... Figuring its curiosity would be an opportunity... Risky. He double barked and we just both held our positions. Turns out 2 had 2 stout pines and 2 thick aspen between it and me, so neither could see each other. About 5 minutes later it had retreated up the ridge and I got a brief glimpse of the spike at 50yds as he passed through a small opening.

Another opportunity. Finding elk. That's a win.

So doing the post mortum why I didn't spot this area... Turns out, I did. I had marked and checked out the spot on black earlier in the day... No sign. 600feet away, my encounter.

Food, grub, moving camp to a new area. Yeah I know your not supposed to leave elk to find elk... I may regret it late.

Couldn’t get any elk to talk until up in the morning, finally had two answer. One was quite a ways away and the other was waaay out there. Hiked a mile to get closer to the closer one, but it had clamed up and wouldn’t respond.

Out for the evening now, beautiful spot. Hopefully something takes an interest in my calling. Hunting partner and I split up to solo this evening.
    Evening area.
