I say do it without any contingencies, that would just add a crutch should the one who loses be the one that suffered the worst disadvantage.

Go at it 100% one on one, the best man wins as all criteria was equal, no excuses. Save the gimmicks for the eventual rematch or perhaps the best 2 out of 3 if a tie breaker should occur.

justin gets to pick todds approximate stand location and Todd Justins based on google maps, you have to be within X feet of a GPS pin location provided by the other

I agree with that - any may revise to give a day or two to map scout prior to heading in.

Most of the places around here are pretty big timber with little scouting to be done from the road, so I'm not sure what sort of advantage that would give anyone. If anything, the big advantage would be extra time to put boots on the ground and walk it a couple of days before the challenge.

I would argue that confirming what you found from map scouting with your own eyes even from just the road is a huge advantage. Locating oak trees near bedding in mid October and you are in the game. Can't always tell what trees are what on the aerials.

Choosing your entry and exit routes via the maps and then being able to confirm those routes will work out is huge. Doesn't matter how great the spot is if you blow everything out going in.

I have found myself let down many times from finding great spots on the aerial and topo maps then them being unhuntable once I get there.

Good luck what ever you guys do. Todd doesn't stand a chance.

    • Swap bows for one of the sits. You shoot Todd's and he shoots yours. Bonus points for a kill with the other person's bow.
    • The extra 25 lbs weight in the pack is a good suggestion.
    • Have some kind of shot challenge before the two day hunt. The winner gets to use the "phone a friend" option and call one of the Hunting Public guys for an on camera tip before the hunt.

    • The problem with swapping bows is purely ethics. Neither one of us can shoot each other's bow as good as we can shoot our own. Hell, Todd probably can't even pull mine back with his bad shoulder.
    • Extra weight in the pack - I like that idea unless I'm the one carrying it.
    • I'd like to think we don't need tips to go find a deer in the woods and kill it. We've both been doing that for quite some time.
Buckeye - your point about finding a spot on the map and then getting there in real life only to find it's not what you thought is spot-on! I did that 2 years ago on a piece of public that looked killer on the map. Hiked my butt in there carrying all my gear and didn't like what I saw. Ended up wandering around for almost 2 hours and not finding anything I liked, then gave up and went home. It was a disaster.

I like the idea, but agree to throw out some of the extra stuff. I would hate to see one of you lose an opportunity on a deer because you had to walk in late (at shooting light) or leave early. A 25lb extra in the pack penalty would work though! Would be enough to suffer a little without being too crazy and shouldn't affect the hunt too much. I think using a big rock vs gym weights would be interesting because of the odd shape being harder to pack. Put a face on it and it can be your "Wilson".

How about the winner of the comp before the hunt gets to phone a friend. They only get to call 1 person that may be able to give them some info on the piece of public your going to hunt.

    Conferring with Wilson:
    where to set a stand/saddle,
catching a breath on a hike,
    Cuts back and forth...
...nice touch. "It makes its own gravy"

Loser has to drag the other guys deer out.
If you both punch a tag on same sit you help each other out and then it becomes a tale of the tape to decide winner.

Love the idea... Don't like the ability to steal/take away anything out of each-others pack... It's just not necessary.

I guess I don't really want to watch to see how much you can do to make the hunt more difficult for each-other... I watch hunting to shows to learn something and to watch people succeed. The last thing I want to see is you or Todd leave the tree stand 30 mores before shooting light ends to find out you bumped a shooter on the way down. That is not the least bit entertaining for me.

I think the challenge is hard enough the way it is:

    No pre scouting

    No pre hung stands

No prior knowledge as to where you are hunting

Difficult time of year to hunt

    Etc. Etc.

I know the area you guys are hunting, and the problem with picking a spot with more notice than the night before is that both of you know people in our circle that are familiar with every piece of ground in that area. I think you guys pick a spot out of the hat the night before, and you have the evening before to look at aerial photos.

I could do without all the rest of the gimmicks, I think watching Graf on public ground carrying 50 pounds of crap while trying to pick a spot is going to be entertaining enough.

My dad just got me hooked on your show. Love watching with my kids. Here goes my first post.

I agree, you don’t want to limit your abilities or it defeats the purpose. And you want to keep it ethical. But there are ways to make it interesting...

Competition before hand... 1) Winner picks the one song the other has to blast while driving the week leading up (because who doesn’t hate having Shania Twain stuck in their head for hours in a tree)
    2) Winner limits the websites the other can visit while sitting in tree

    For scoring...
    200 pts for a buck
    100 for a doe
    20 for a squirrel
-10 pts for every .5 miles walked
-10 for every 200MB data used

1,000 points if you can get your wife on camera saying this isn’t a huge waste of time and that she will take care of the kids and the house while you focus on victory

I also agree with keeping it straight up. In late or out early could mess up someone else's hunt. being it is public land.

    is
"fine just do whatever you want"
or a "do what you think is best?
or "fine, just go, Ill XYZ by myself"

close enough, because I could get one of those responses

Those sound like automatic disqualification responses to me.

This would be awesome to see it unfold! It'd sure be nice to see some more public land hunts!

Well - here we go! Headed out for a 1.5 day public land hunt with Todd. We decided to drop the whole idea of the competition and all the challenges and simply just go hunt. We picked a spot I've been to before, but have only covered about 1/2 of it. I plan on testing out a few new spots I haven't been in, and Todd's going for the "old man 100 yards from the truck" spots.

Keep an eye on the social stories to see how this unfolds....
