Looks great.....but I've got to ask, don't you have a bush hog for your tractor? I use the hell out of mine.
Yes ,yes we do but I hate switching equipment and I need the disc on now as well. I actually like the work out, though the knee I tore up my ACL is acting up a bit. The incline on field I only partially, is a bit steeper than you'd think and the drag from the falling rye is "real". Our tractor has a backhoe, york rake, bush hog, disc, and tines.
So got it done save a tiny area around the goat barn. Eeggadddsss. The red clover was literally 3 ft tall! I went to lunch came back to finish and kicked two fawn out of it. I then weighted the drag and dragged it a few times. Then walked my brassica mix and Alice , lidino, and red over it all. Went to leave in Gator looked over and there is a rabbit's eating 5ft from me. I had just shut Gator a couple of minutes before..lol. Soaking in tub( knees on fire ) when all goes dark..ha pouring out. Timing!
I went and bought some winter peas, purple top turnip seed, and 100lbs of winter wheat and 100lbs of soybean seed today. They tear the soybeans up here....about 2-3 more weeks and I get it in the ground. Sent from my SM-S102DL using Tapatalk

Ya I've been putting in the new plots early due to needing to alert them to a new food source and hoping to change a travel pattern. Besides I never know what tomorrow might bring as far as weather , or old injuries, like my knees. I prefer to be out the woods way before the Oct 1 opener and have more shooting time than work in those late summer weeks. Best to you this season

While waiting for bees to calm down, I got cat house off the porch, took a walk. Here are those 2 plots so far. Pretty fast growth I think, though birds are thinning it, lots of blades pulled and left.
So the cut rye field is working. The brassica is popping up great though.....not seeing the rye. Now grant not a ton of rain yet but the 30 turkey are crazed in hitting it. In fact at 12pm I was out there walking bent over looking for the sprouts and picking rocks. I look up and 20 yrds away in the small hay plot, I am allowing to over grow with golden rod, are the turkey moving around. I stood watching them a while but they finally figured out I was there and slowly filed out of the plot to my woods ....hhhmmm no wonder I wasn't seeing rye sprouts LOL
No rest for the wicked today I did a final discing for upper plots. I went from the rye plot and disced a tractor wide trail around the clover then clover rye. Then opened it up and disced a plot the size of the clover plot to meet the trail I planted last week. This will be my new brassica mix.I then did a tiny spot around the brush pile " cubby " I went back dragged it heavy and picked rocks. I'm not spraying this year. I mowed close did the above and when it all dries I will drag one more time and seed just before a good rain. This will have the upper section finished...maybe.. I'll have a continuous "plot" of food varying in size and plant from the front road to 40 yards off back line 1300 ft. Then I'll start the middle and lower plots which I mowed a day ago. I need to go buy a bag of rye as a back up,or winter wheat what ever is cheapest.
Headed out to disc lower Plots...rain due tomorrow. Also dragging the cut wheat to over seed with brassica and more clovers. Hoping this no spraying works. I really am getting tired of glysophate. I'm switching to more late summer /fall plotting .
Thanks.. Doing those small plots with the 30 hp JD and a disc is lets say a whole lot of shifting. That and my head on a swivel to avoid trees and stumps.. Most of that's been in clover for a few years now the brassica with a mid Sept rye walk over maybe red clover for next years crops.
Old. Gotta ask as it's been driving me NUTS. Those small, in the woods,shaded spots, have you EVER had a good brassica stand??? I can't help but think no- way??
Yes sir ! Many years ago when I first started those plots in what I call the oak flat I planted rape. Now that came in so well I swore I'd never grow it again because it got invasive. I couldn't kill the stuff. That's when I switched to clover legume blends they were over seeded in rye and turnips. These plots actually get more sun than it looks. My biggest issue there is the moss. I just can't kill it and within two to three seasons it over takes the plots. This is in All my plots. Now I lime every time I plant, but the soils here aren't wet they are moist with shade. I've tried all kinds of moss kill additives but spores just blow back in and take over. I also use mostly 10 20 20 fertilizers. I'm discing in 24 4 0 into these this time because it's whats on hand. Mostly I like spraying on miracle grow once things get their true leaves. That way I avoid equipment on the plants This mix I'm using is a pasja forage, purple top turnip, rape, and ground hog radish. I also throw down a bit of clover in the mix. As far as getting hit hard that's why I like the rye walk over in September. These plots have always been the candy store I use to keep deer closer to my interior areas away from from the guys that shoot into my property. Also the trespassing. Which has always been bad here. One reason more and more blinds are going up. During season I always leave the windows open and curtains closed(camo mesh). They can not tell if I'm in them. I wait until they cross the line then call out " looking to get arrested hey?! " . Sometimes more fun than hunting watching the reactions...lol one mental midget screamed at me what the F you doing hiding?! Lol ya I'm hiding on my own land in my own blinds. I watched one guy stand on the line screaming up at my blind, until his buddy noticed me standing in my woods next a stand watching him...lol Anyhow so far I'm happy with the mix. Sprouting and growing fast, in first plots planted. Yes yes I'm long winded..hahaha
So in a beat advisory I out and dragged all the rest of plots. Tied a section of log to harrow drag and slowly went over disced areas a few times and the cut wheat many times . That will Get more clover and brassica. Dang just drivin Gator was tough ,cab was a tad warm. . Big lane way is sick with rocks ,but too hot to deal with them now.will seed all tonight, rain due tomorrow.
