I've always admired the western spot and stalk style of hunting but it doesn't lend itself to the woods of VA. I've tried a handful of times to hunt from the ground with no luck and was losing all hope in that style. I was gonna go fishing today but with all the rain I assumed the river was gonna be too high and fast, when i got home i saw a little buck walking around the yard around noon so figured deer were moving. Decided since we had a ton of rain and it was windy i was gonna push right into a bedding area. Took my time and went real slow getting into the area, basically only moving when the wind blew. I stopped in one area i was certain i would see a deer bedded and stood still for about 20 minutes. Started moving again and heard something moving in front of me, had the wind in my face and slight right to left so i wasn't worried about that at all, but there wasn't much cover so i was hoping it wouldn't come straight on. I was able to make out a doe around 60 yards. Wind was good and i had a tree blocking the view so i started moving up. Got to about 40 and decided to wait her out. A little bit later (not sure how long) i made out another doe which made me nervous. I was afraid I'd get busted by one I didn't see so I decided to move up more and go for it (still had no real cover). Got to 32, her head was behind a tree and i could just make out the front leg. Got myself settled and let it fly. Hit sounded perfect and 3 does took off running. I found my arrow and it looked perfect but couldn't find blood anywhere. I looked around for a while went back to the arrow and the blood looked dried so i was afraid the hit was further back than i wanted. Decided to follow a few of the trails in the direction they ran and 60 yards from impact she was lying there, died on the run. To summarize, snuck in, found deer, stalked in, smoked it! Probably the most accomplished I've felt so far as a bowhunter. It was an awesome experience, especially being able to be stealthy enough to move in at the end. Having spot, stalked, and killed one deer in a CRP-type area in mid-Michigan I can sort of relate to the feeling of accomplishment. Congrats, brother.
Excellent job stalking a whitetail. They are much different, especially in the timber, vs. stalking a Mulie or elk.
Congratulations! That is what woodcraft is all about. I can sit but find the challenge of stalking to be fun, even if I don't get a deer.
