We finished hanging my second stand for the managed hunt yesterday afternoon. Now we'll see what the weather brings Saturday. I plan on hunting this area pretty hard since we only have 3 weeks to hunt. Hopefully Mother Nature cooperates too. I have a few scattered days off too so that will help.
Wow a lot of great deer have been killed so far. we are still in striking distance of kicking everyone's butts. My season continues until 31 Jan, how about ya'll? I still have three tags to fill.
Russ we run until Feb 2. I have two tags to fill. We are for sure within striking range. I’m hoping for a good buck but man they seem to have vanished. Little bucks are made of meat and score points for the team too! Good luck, it would be great to see you break the 200 point barrier.
you are not kidding, all the big bucks I had on my place here in Louisiana are GONE. three spikes and numerous does. I am hitting the stand Friday for an all day sit. we will not start to see rut activity until after Xmas.
I'm going to try Thursday morning ahead of the rain. We'll see what happens. If nothing else I'll try Friday and the weekend.
I have my gear in the wash and I'm starting to do some early loading for the trip to Arkansas. I'll be heading out Friday morning and I should be on stand Friday afternoon. The deer here at home are almost totally nocturnal right now because of all the orange activity. I did get a glimpse of the big boy here but it was right at last light and he didn't cross onto my property until after shooting light. I think it would be best to leave the deer here alone for a few days to let them calm down a bit. In case you missed it in the live from the stand thread, I took a 100+ yard shot with my 45-70 Monday morning and missed. I'm not sure why I missed, but I don't trust the gun now until I get a chance to shoot it again. It doesn't matter though, since gun season is over. To be honest, I'm glad I missed. I am about 95% sure it was the same buck I let walk earlier in gun season. I'm looking forward to getting back out with my bow, but hunting Wattensaw WMA in Arkansas is TOUGH. Those deer are educated beyond belief. If you kill any deer there you've done something. Like I've said before, that's the only place I've ever been where the lead doe in a group is constantly looking up in the trees for hunters. One mistake and the jig is up. The season runs there until 28 February, so I still have a lot of season left. To be honest, though, I've hunted hard for a long time and I'm starting to get a little burned out. I think the trip to our club cabin in Arkansas is just what I need. It's party night every night and it's more about having fun than it is killing deer. When you over do it, though, it sure sucks climbing a tree the next morning with a hangover.
As I said above, the Arkansas season runs until 28 February. Missouri ends sometime in January and Kentucky ends sometime in January also. I said earlier in the year that my goal was 15 deer. That was really a joke. I've put seven deer in the freezer so far. Four of the does were huge and the buck was massive, so I only have room for about two more in my upright freezer. I could fit more but the door storage is totally full of bass fillets.
Well I finally shot a deer the other night. It was at work after it had been hit by a car with my service pistol but it counts right?? Luckily the deer didn’t suffer to much meat damage and I actually salvaged probably 75% of the meat for my freezer. Also going to have a pretty cool European mount out of the ordeal also!
Definitely a cool looking mount! Chief you have been killing like I remember! Great season. We go until Jan 15th. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Enjoy family time. I'm going to try this morning until the rain gets here then it'll be Saturday before I'm out.
You had me there! I read the first sentence and was pumping my fist in the air. Wife thought I was losing it! I will be locked down doing family stuff the next few days. Next chance will be Sunday evening. Hopefully the rain holds off. Doe will be on the hit list too. Good luck guys. Stay after it. Putting a few doe on the scorecard is going to put us in the thick of it. A couple bucks and will have the target on our backs.
Looking ahead to next week the temps will be in the 40’s I am hunting Monday, Tuesday & Friday. It’s getting cold The rut is over It’s getting frustrating Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Nothing to report from yesterday’s hunt here in Louisiana, other than it was 74 degrees. Back at it this morning.
