How come I sweat on the way to my stand with bibs and coat unzipped and no hat on, yet on the walk back I walk faster, it's 20 degrees warmer, but no sweat?
God is punishing you? LOL Our bodies matebolism is a weird thing. It's trying to fire up the furnace in the morning walk in so we are throwing off more heat, a survival instinct much like adrenaline. Thanks to our Neanderthal ancestors. The Lizard people don't have this issue I hear. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
This is truth, I actually noticed it this morning. Yesterday I was cold geared up, walked down with everything zipped up and was really overheated when I got to stand. Was too bulky to strip off so had to sit and wait. Walk back up, I was out of breathe but not really sweating. This morning, I wore lighter gear knowing it was getting into the 50's. I stopped 3/4 the way there after bumping an ubknown deer, maybe 45 seconds. When I go to stand I was still sweating but not like the morning before. I think it is because we sneak in but not out in most cases. In the morning we try to control every aspect of the step to be quiet as possible, the drier and/or colder the louder the ground cover. On the way out we try to be quiet, but not as quiet since we are leaving. I think all the concentration of controlling muscles to be quiet footed is like doing crunches over sit ups. Slower and more controlled movements but more muscle use and heat generated to do so. After I kill, by the time I walk back up, I'm out of breathe and overheated because I'm intent on getting back to grab retrieval gear and walking way faster than a normal done for the day walkout.
You’re on to something. Usually in the morning on the way in it’s dead quiet. So trying to be extra quiet, one might engage more muscles for balance, and like you said, controlling the step
I think this is spot on! It's exactly what I thought was making me sweat on my way in, and I'm careful not to move too quickly. I have several obstacles on my route as well, so my steps need to be deliberate. This type of walking must use up more energy, causing the sweating. I'll often carry my coat wedged into my stand on the way in to keep me cooler.
I've done boxers and boots, had to run back to truck to get release for an afternoon hunt in early October. Got back down to the pond and stripped to boxers the other half of the way. Knew there wasn't any trail cams on the property
I think it because your already warm when going to your stand. Your either coming from your house or a warm vehicle so your temp is already up. After sitting in a stand for hours your body’s temp is cooler and walking back after your hunt takes longer for your body to heat up. My uneducated guess.
This is what I THINK also. Not sure its true, but I think it's harder to walk quietly than to just walk back to the truck.
I think to control heat one needs to use 30 minutes extra to get to stand rather than get to stand 60 minutes early to cool down. Divide it into 3 legs, rest 10 minutes at each stop to cool down and stay that way. Still get into stand 30 minutes early which I feel is plenty, at least for me anyway.
Im guessing its more nerves, the excitement and anticipation of getting to your stand. We tend to get in more of a hurry on way to stand. sometimes its hard to slow down.
Agreed! Your excitement and adrenaline is up and believe it or not, you walk at a faster pace. I carry a lot of gear in with me. Backpack with camera gear, camera arm and accessories, my bow and sometimes deer scents in a zip lock bag. That extra weight and poor conditioning can make you sweat more. Try this. Walk a little ways and stop and look. Do this 2-3 times on your way to the stand. What has helped me is I stop and apply Evercalm to the bottom of my boots 2-3 times as I walk to the stand. This allows me to not sweat as much and stay cooler.
