They will often bring them to a more remote location- middle of a hay field or a middle of some dinky fence row where other bucks wont find their prized possession. This is called "tending" and the buck spends 24 - 36 hours with a doe, breed several times, and then go on their way. The time they are away from the other deer is called lock down. The buck will actually prevent the doe from going back near other deer. The fawns are pushed away by the buck. If you see fawns wandering without mothers, they are probably getting bred

 

Congrats to all the killers! I'm just winding down from the trip to Florida and looking forward to hunting Monday. It is gonna be a cold day monday with emphasis on cooooold. Hopefully the big boys move.

Finally caught up on this thread. Congrats to those who shed blood and good luck for those that are still looking for their deer or just not posting about it........Shane lol.

 

Blood will be on the ground Monday. I wish I could go from 10am-sunset bc I think with the temps dropping and weather they are going to move all day. I'm getting out at 3pm for sure.

 

Yeah, I knew most of that, just wasn't sure whether the buck pushed her to his core or how the bedding part took place.

Got me curious on two levels.

Wouldn't scouting for buck beds be best done during the rut when they are bedding elsewhere and not in their core area as much? Aside from nit hunting the rut, say you tag out early. Get aggressive and move into his core and find beds, plant cams to check later to see if he's still alive etc.

Secondly, if you jumped a bedded doe and buck would that mean anything as far as location of his core or bedding area.

While hunting I have been sswitching stands before and jumped up a bedded doe and buck at the bottom of the pond damn. They didn't move until I was right on them and he was in the thicker stuff ready to bolt. Another time I was hunting a stand and my uncle asked me to move so he could sight in his rifle for MO opener. Gave me a ride most of way to other stand and I walked the rest of the way, still hunted and seen a bedded doe, crept up slowly arrow knicked and recording, she got up and bolted then he did as well, I didn't even see him. I posted the vid on here at one point been 5-7 years probably.

Just trying to figure out how to make things happen rather than sitting in wait hoping they happen.

But yeah, I have also seen a buck bedded in the middle of a cut corn field, doe was probably there as well but was more focused on him. Seen a similar thing on public land once, uck standing and doe bedded at the end of a farmers lane that hunters could not use. Grassy field and cut fields all around. He was in the wide open but so would be anyone trying to sneak in.

Sunday Night
A chance of rain before 1am, then a chance of rain and snow between 1am and 4am, then a chance of snow after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 30. North wind 8 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Veterans Day
Snow likely before noon. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 32. North northwest wind 15 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Monday Night
Mostly clear, with a low around 13. North northwest wind 11 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

 

Sunday the high is 69° at 4pm and the front starts to come through the last hour and a half of light.
I'm changing my mind on Monday.. 42mph gusts with sustained 25-30mph winds. I was just looking at temps. Tuesday however, looks clear, calm and perfect.

 

Where's LC been? I need to know the best day to hunt between the 12th and 17th, aside from all of them

I've sucked on my predictions as far as when the massacre ensues.

I still might go out Monday morning, but winds still supposed to be gusting in the 20's overnight Sunday. The only reason I want to is a doe may lose interest when bred, but a buck won't until the final doe is.

Kinda want to use the hand cannon again this year, haven't hunted firearm season in a couple years. Can use my bow if I haven't connected yet.

 

Something like mid 20s and snow with north winds at 20 that are supposed to diminish on monday for me. I have a spot in mind already for morning and evening.
