Congratulations on your elk! Believe I saw your post on the Archery Elk facebook page. What would you say is the biggest take-away experience you have from your elk hunt? Tactics or mistakes you made that you will change for the future? Going out west for my first next year.
I’m not on Facebook maybe someone else posted it. Biggest takeaway? I’ll name several 1. I’d rather be lucky than good 2. The altitude is a killer no matter how much you train. 3. Use a heavy arrow. Pretty sure it made a difference. 4. Utilize the gutless method 5. Draw your bow early. Elk cover ground quickly 6. Love merino wool 7. Go at your own pace don’t push yourself to hard. Mistakes 1. Don’t ship your meat. Convenient but very expensive. 2. Rainwear is only good for sitting. 3. Slightly quartering to can be deceiving. I hunted one whole day so I’m definitely not an expert. Appreciate the advice! Got my first pair of merino wool socks this year and OH MY they are amazing. Warm when its cold and my feet dont sweat when its warm! I don't plan on getting lucky enough to harvest one but hope to! Just going to be a great experience in the wilderness!
No luck! Could have shot a decent little 5x5 the first night but passed and then little to nothing the rest if the 5 days. They were bedding on knolls of thick cedar and pinion around 8.30am and not coming back out to water or feed until after last light. We had a good time and one of my dads buddies tagged along, he has trapped that area for 40+ years and dude had stories. Best part, no cell service, media or wives just meat, potatoes, whiskey and a campfire.
