An unknown squash to me. I'll take a pic of the fruit when ripe. They get about 10 -15 lbs. Got the seeds and said they were a " rare" type. Grew some last year. Freaking fansatic!!!! Saved some seeds and planted ONE between the rocks. This is what has become. Hard to tell but I'm guessing it about 35' x 25'. Growing fruit like crazy!. Did plant a few in a food plot. Not doing near as well but they are setting fruit. Hoping the deer like em as much as the acorn\ buttercup ones I plant every year. View attachment 94475 Yes, that's a Mt dew can on the leaf.
Have got about 28 off this already and about 15 more to go. I have some in a food plot and the deer are hammering them. Ave weight, 18-20 lbs.
Wl704 and Bob. I googled both of them and neither seem to be them. ? The hide on these is thin and can be eaten but it has a rougher looking texture than the 2 you suggested.
I grow delectica, I don't think so much to big. Does this look and taste just like last years squash ? Perhaps a cross? I lean to the banana.
Old. Not sure if the taste is the same as the ones last year were picked later and I think they were more ripe? Sure are good eating tho. As for a cross, possible Does the banana have a smooth skin?
They in general are in not deep ridged or bumpy like a gourd. Though there are several varieties of banana squash heirlooms and hybrids. This is the first year I haven't planted a deer squash plot. My squash plants have been pitiful. I'll have a couple of blues and only 7-12 acorn and butternuts. Pumpkins the same. RAIN. Ever single forecast that says no rain it pours. I was out cutting yesterday and got soaked before making it home. Last year my best garden others complain about no rain and I only watered 2x's in the spring. Yours look great !
Easiest job is a weather forecaster. Where else can you be wrong 60% of the time and still get a paycheck? Will show this to the wife as she might know as her grandfather had a big garden. Never thought of squash of any kind being deer food. Recipe- Slice onions, butternut squash or any squash in season, zucchini, and put in a covered glass dish with a bit of butter, no water is necessary as it will steam itself. Wife discovered Ziploc steaming bags, work great and can be used several times. Bon apetit!
Spiral summer squash, shaved garlic, roasted red peppers sauteed. You can spiral a bunch and keeps well in fridg for a quick side dish. Deer love winter type squash . They stomp them open and hollow them out. Spring planting on bare ground kill weeds smooth then plant crop seed or plants. Then a low growing clover seed across the entire area. I plant pumpkins late in June. This has them ready a Halloween not a month early. So making an area weed free through cultivation is easier and a combo of clover beets and turnips as well. Ps. Save water melon and melon seeds for a squash melon plot deer will love it and most seed is free.
Ha! I thought I was the only one who planted Squash as a food plot. You're alright Old I think I'm gonna start planting the a bit later. Maybe mid- late june instead of early June. The way the deer are hammering them, there won't be any left when I usually start hinting mid- late October.
Been doing it for years. Right after I planted cukes and squash around a sweet corn patch to keep the raccoons at bay. Then the deer came on and found both deliscous...lol... So goes gardening in the wilds...lol Another reason I plot. I have the garden fence lined with early and late dropping fruits. on three sides plots and the fourth is clover and grass we mow. This has helped with the garden destruction . Planting peppers and tomatoes around brassic has help. Though my tomatoes are on 4x8 rebar mesh.
LOL I don't know about that ,bad knees , back, shoulder ,and compressed spine. I thought my worse job was the receptionist at a big hair salon. As bad as it was working with a bunch of woman and for a megalomaniac I miss sitting behind a desk....
