As for OP pass through would be heavy/high FOC/high speed and fixed. But it's a timeless argument that will be posted a few times a year.
Agree Fix. Sota, they are!. I blew up your avitar pic to see what color yours are but you have your nose is stuck so high up I can't see them.
I know this thread is a few days old already, so apologies. But, if the OP shoots fixed heads already, AND is nervous about the potential for the mech not opening, why consider mechs at all in the first place? Stick with fixed blades and let what happens happen. If you hit shoulder then, with the exception of a less than pristine shot, you've done all that you can to prevent a lost deer. BTW, the mech will work fine with your set up. I like my Magnus Black Hornets though. Gave up on flimsy wing heads a few years back.
Great post! It bothers me when these type of post's come up. Mech heads of " any" sort are just a gimmick. The only reason to shoot them as I can see is if your a gutt shooter or shooting long range in windy conditions.. If I'm wrong, can someone explain any other benefits?. Hey SotaPop. Haven’t shot anything with a bow, but from everything I’ve gathered. I’m going to start with fixed blade broadheads. From what information I’ve been gathering, less can go wrong with a fixed blade and good ones shoot well. I’m going to try the G5 Montec first because I was given some as a gift. I will try some mechanicals on coyotes first then on pigs. I hunt a lot of “non-game” species such as coyote and pig. I intend to test different broadheads out for myself on those animals. That’s what I recommend if you can do it. If it won’t work on a coyote, it probably won’t work on a deer... See if you can find a local farmer or rancher who is having problems with coyotes and if they’ll let you hunt them with your bow. You’d be surprised how many will accept the help, Especially if you’re not hunting with a firearm around their animals.
There are a select few places for mechinals. Unfortunately whitetail hunting from stands they have little to no benefits, in fact they maybe be a net negative. Think long shots, windy, steep and open county and mechanical that is being pushed by a heavy arrow and that's where they shine and give you slightly higher hit ratio. Goats, lopes, coues deer, Sitka Blacktails, Mule deer, caribou and sheep all are great candidates for mechanical broadheads.
I carry both and can think of three reasons why mechanicals have their place. One of the places I hunt is 4600 to 5000 feet and are very steep mountains. When form is bad and mountains are steep I prefer a mechanical. The other reason is I prefer a Spitfire because the blades stay closed so they do not get dulled by taking them in and out of your quiver. And the third reason is wind. If I have high winds I always opt for the mechanical Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
