Our acorns are a little sparse this year after blankets of them on the ground last year. Good thing in my book.
Years ago I used to travel to Elma all the time to visit a customer. Always enjoyed that area of NY State.
Acorn drop doesn't affect me much for deer anymore as I've quit hunting early season but it can sure screw up the bear baits! Just got back from a local tavern. Had a few cold ones whilst listening to the farmers ***** about this cool,wet weather. They are in dire straights now! Wheat still standing and not much relief in site. It makes for a horrible winter going in with saturated ground.
Dont even get me started on this years farming efforts.. lost all my wheat in three separate counties, couldn't even bale it. Got in a pilot program for industrial hemp got it planted, came up nice, had record setting g rain that made it shallow rooted and then July through august 20th something had only a quarter inch of rain and heat, zapped it dead. Only had one good cutting of alfalfa for horse hay, my money maker and the rest have been wholesale to a dairy, barely break even. If it I didnt have such bad luck I wouldn't have any at all..
We had MISERABLE plot results last two years and were fighting it like crazy. pH was coming back from soil tests at 6+ so we didn’t think it was lime....we tried different fertilizer and planting times and even new seed all with horrific results. We got almost nothing but weeds from Biologic products last year. Anyways I just said screw it this year and we limed at 2 tons per acre just out of frustration and it seems to have been the answer. Maybe faulty soil test results but we had numerous done at different sites so who knows. From now on when in doubt LIME LIME LIME Top pick is 3 weeks and bottom pick is 2 weeks. Should have tons of forage for them all the way to January
How many of you fellas hunt right over a plot? Very seldom do I. I tend to hunt the thicker cover away from the plots. Hate having to come out of a stand at dark blowing deer off the plots.
I do during the rut bc I'm hunting more over the does than a plot. Most times I hunt trails leading into the plot and the edges just inside the woods, staging areas. Huge fan and avid reader of all things Wensel brothers. This year I have a few stands placed in areas that I think the bucks check does from downwind. I do like watching the plots at sunset, always plenty to see but have found that with bow hunting and being to close in can backfire on ya bc their is always that one doe that has to get out by herself and always downwind of ya.
Season is in here but every day is pretty much 100 degree heat index. Not the least bit interested in hunting yet.
We put in a small clover plot 3 years ago and it did great with no fertilizer, just mowing it once or twice a year. Planted a beans/ sunflowers blend in an additional area the last couple years. These plots are 300 yards behind my shop. We had 34 wooded acres half an hour away the last few years but sold it this year and decided to focus on public. It’s fun to mess around with plots close to home but it’s easy to overhunt smaller areas, which we definitely did in some cases. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'll try and get some pics of some of my plots. The brassicas and pumpkin plots are unreal this year. Last year, I was focused on a true booner straight up 4x4. 28 inch spread,28" beams and g 2 s and 3s that were sky high. He disappeared but I think I seen him ( glimpse) a few eves ago. He's a freeken giant¡!!!
We do both......mostly early season if we want to sit we will put in an evening on a plot. Good for inventory and not pressuring them too early. Rarely though do our biggest bucks hit the plots until LATE to refuel for the post rut winter approaching. As the season heats up we will dig in areas where the bigger bucks sneak through to check the plots for receptive does.
Oopps on the double tap. This is the only one I could get to due to mud. That's a 6 gallon bucket. And it's probably the worst field I have this year.
