Mock scrape experiment

Last year I saw (I’m pretty sure it was bow hunt or die) a guy stake a oak branch up in a food plot as a lick branch and tried it. It worked great except on November 11 a nice buck broke off the branch for the lick. This year I’m gona try to take it up a notch. I went to Lowe’s got 12’ 4x4 in treated pine and a adjustable flag holder. I buried about 4-5’ of the board and put the holder as high as I comfortably could. Hopefully that will help keep the branch from breaking. And might even get some good pictures of bucks rubbing on the board too.

Nice. I'm thinking of doing something similar. Got a small plot, and deciding on doing scrape in middle or try an actual tree near border.

 

Keep experimenting. This is something I tried a few years ago with mixed results.

 

Any action on this set up? Did you have any of the same deer come back to it?

 

Lots of young buck activity, but the big boys weren't interested. I had to pull it down early in October, so I don't have a full year of data.

 

Scrapes just start opening up in early October here. I’ll pry put a branch up early September

Finished product. I will now leave it alone. Might check that camera once around the start of season standing on the ranger but other then that the area is ready for the year. We shall see.

this is a pretty good idea.
could you get a land scaping 4x4 with rounded edges made out of pine and it also be used to rub? (as long as its not treated)

I have a red cedar right on the edge of my plot trimmed perfectly for a scrape or a rub and the damn deer ignore it.

 

i made a horizontal rub post out of red cedar, either its too high or the deer don't want a horizontal rub post

 

That may have been the better option, maybe next time if they don’t like this one.

It’s all about location. You may put that same post in a different spot and they destroy it. Only reason I put this much effort on this year is it worked last year here and I wanted something stronger to hold up. Also tried another one in a differ location to see if it works as well about a mile south

One stop shop, I like it. Keep us posted. I'm using Code Blue scrape mate this year, so we'll see how they respond.
