I've fallen for about every " gimmick" know to anything archery. ( Accept mech heads) . Have learned after 100' s of hours in the stand very few things actually make a difference. Camo pattern is about the biggest gimmick! If you hunt and have a set range of 30 yards and under, a peep site is another piece of useless equipment. ZERO need for one. Whitnessed it 2 night ago. A bear came in at 10 yards and a lady friend drew only to have the damn thing twist on her. I was filming it and couldn't figger out why she was contorting her face and taking so much time while the bear was perfectly broadside. Without a peep, she could have taken that shot in 2 seconds from hitting anchor point. I know most seasoned Fellas have fallen for gimmicks, what ya got?
if you have a kisser you don't need a peep, and if you have a peep you don't need a kisser. Either will get you a consistent anchor and neither are not in unto themself a gimmick. But to have both is overkill. I would say that the biggest gimmick I have fallen for is laundry detergent. Could probably get away with normal arm and hammer scent/phosphate free. That and scents. I have had several young bucks fall for scent bombs, etc. Have yet to have a mature buck come in on to them. Possible exception is Ever Calm.
I’ve got a buddy who is obsessed with a certain type of scent cover for coyotes. It smells like pure vanilla extract. While it works fine, I’ve not had any problems when we/I haven’t used it. I’ve not noticed any different. Most guys I know are very “ritualistic” in their hunting routines. Bow hunters more so than others... lol. Almost all “scent killer” smells like dirt. A friend makes his own for free with water, a strainer, some dirt, sand, and native plant life. Takes him a few minutes to get a 5 gallon bucket of the stuff and it works... he puts it in a spray bottle and sprays it all over his gear and clothes.
Negative Sotapop! I tried a peep once and it twisted enuff for me to get rid of the damn thing! Noodles, yep. A kisser button for me.
Scent control was my biggest gimmick growing up. Now I don't care what I'm wearing or what I smell like. I hunt the buck I'm after and use the wind, thermals and terrain. Don't buy cheap strings and don't let a hack set up your bow. There are millions of peeps installed on bows out there in use, it is you not the peep. But then again you have witnessed thousands of bow kills shocked that the BHOD crew does not hire you as a consultant.
Do not ponder arrow weight, do not ponder KE from the bow, ignore the millions in use, according to B & B they are a gimmick and junk.
I actually was at the store this past weekend to get laundry soap for my hunting clothes. They wanted $12 for a small thing of "hunting soap". I went to the laundry section and found a big thing of no dye/no perfume generic laundry soap for $3. Will last me 10 times as long and its the exact same thing.
around 1`970 I purchased an apple corer broadhead, 2 blades twisted to form an s shape on each side, nice idea, flew like a rock, impossible to sharpen, well only bought 1 to try it out !
Mechanicals a gimmick? How are they a gimmick? My favorite gimmick is the Steer-A-Deer. Only saw the ad for it and I can’t find a pic of it, but it’s hilarious!
Double barrel arrow loader. Google it! Luckily, I got one for free, but it only lasted about 30 seconds on my bow.
Peeps a gimmick? I'll never be convinced of that, more info is needed. Like Sota said, cheap strings that stretch often will do it...like most factory strings in my experience. I'd say it was probably more from a peep that was already out of alignment and the hunter decided they could work with it and it'd be fine, rather than taking it to the shop to have some twist put in to correct it. I bet most of us have done that...I know I have...but then during a hunt you forget to apply some twist before knocking the arrow and can't see through it when you draw. Or it was a no d-loop setup and the peep aligner tube broke, those things always rot away pretty fast. I've never seen a peep just suddenly turn way out of alignment. If that happened something drastically changed and it probably wouldn't shoot to POA anyway. I can proudly say I've never went for a bow gimmick...but fishing lures, that is another story. "The flying lure" and the "Banjo minnow" both got me. I can say I never once have caught a fish on the flying lure, but have caught a handful on the minnow, only because the bass were wanting a minnow bait though and it didn't matter what kind you threw at them.
She had her bow set up at a " pro shop" they set it up with a super small appature. Why I don't know. A peep is not needed for close range shots. She was stacking arrows at 25 yards a couple hours before the bear hunt.
