A buddy and I are in with a general tag this year. First elk hunt for both of us. Lots of studying and research to do.
I burnt all my points last year and had a fantastic hunt. Threw my name in the hat again for this season but not surprisingly no tag... Also a no go in AZ so it's off to plan C for me now... Good luck on your hunt!
Maybe, possible I could end up in CO this fall ha ha :-) I really just meant that Plan A (WY) I didn't draw, Plan B (AZ) I didn't draw so now it's on to my third option which I was calling Plan C - which as it sits right now is to draw in NM... If I strike out there, I'll just keep working down the line and see what options are still available....
Camper’s packed and we’re headed out for Wyoming in the morning. Spending about 5 weeks getting the lay of the land and doing a little spring bear hunting.
Good luck!! Bring some warm clothes too, good chance you'll see snow - kinda depends on where you go...
We got snow in the high country yesterday here in Utah. I would guess Wyoming got some. Good luck and let us know how you do.
Believe it or not I did draw my 3rd choice in NM! 1st archery hunt in a decent unit - not one of the units known for great trophy potential but should be able to get into some elk (I actually hunted\drew it about 12ish years ago so it will be fun to go back to an area that I've at least a little familiar with)! Also excited as I asked a friend to apply with me that has always wanted to try elk hunting but didn't know where to start and so I'll be taking him on his first elk hunt and trying to get him into some action!!
About thirty years ago, I was glassing for high desert muleys and spotted a herd of elk at the base of Pilot Butte west of Rock Springs, Wyoming, and though that was a long time ago, there has been no significant human development there and might be a viable option for someone to consider. In this herd, there was a MASSIVE bull, and I'm sure his male offspring carry his antler genetics.
I am building points for wyoming elk. Hoping to draw Antelope there in 2020 and then elk in 2022. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Best of luck! My hunt will be over about the time you are starting - got my stuff packed and heading west tomorrow once I’m off work.... going to be hard being productive!!
