Im an experienced bow hunter and I thought I was sure about my set up this year but, now for some reason I'm over thinking...please help lol See attached file
I shoot a 400gr arrow for everything. Has blown through deer and turkey no problem up to 35 yards with expandables and fixed blades. Anything from 400 to 450 grain arrow should be just fine. I don't know what my FOC, FPS, or KE is but I know it kills and is accurate.
If you pick three spines from your favorite arrow maker, one above and one below the recommended chart spine, then shoot the most accurate both field and broadhead. 400gr - 500gr will kill any deer or elk. Just get worried about deer ducking arrows with a slower bow and heavier arrows ,which I have never had happen before but is my biggest fear so
Won't avoid the"drop" when already alert they are quick as lightning. If you truly have the option shoot what ever groups the best. Or do the math and decide.
You cam always play around with speed vs. weight. If you are in the 220-270 fps you are good to go. Just don’t give up too much momentum, and absolutely be accurate. I agree with Fix, dropping deer is based on the situation. Work on reading deer behavior and shot placement. I know women who shoot deer with 400+ grn and 45lbs and they kill deer. Hope this helps.
The fastest arrow might seem a better option but the heavier arrow might produce a much quieter shot. If they all group well, I'd use the one that gave me the most confidence.
Well, last season I blew through a doe at 28 yards with a 60lbs. draw at 28.5" using a 522 gr. arrow with 17% FOC. I don't care about it's FPS, so it wasn't ever tested. Heavy arrows are quiet arrows, and they hit like a freight train.
