40 yard Group Questions

This is where my 40 group is, I've gotten it pretty consistent about like this. Realistically what should my group be at 40 yards and I'm talking about someone that practices but will never shoot in competition. I've harvested 8 elk within 40 yards and never had a bad shot but I bought a new bow that has the capability of shooting a lot further. I would like to start deer hunting and practicing out to 60 yards and hopefully make my 40 yard groups tighter. I'm just curious if this is a decent group or do I need spot lights so I can stay up all night for the next 3 months before late season Deer.

Middle of the road

 

General rule of thumb. 1 inch per 10 yards for grouping.


So 100 yards, 10 inches
50 yards 5 inches
40 yards 4 inches.

You’re fine there but certainly I’m confident being it’s a new bow, you can tighten em up too !

Keep slinging. Don’t be afraid of it shooting 100 or 80 yards. It makes 40 feel like a sucker shot.

Agreed with the longer distances helping out your closer shots. Won't comment on the grouping sizes though, as I'm never satisfied with saying "good enough."

This is what I’ve always gone by

 

Just remember arrows are cheap enough. I’d rather lose a couple out practicing further and further then to have that trophy animal walk out further then your comfortable shooting. I hunt basically hard woods with a few open spots but I’m sighted in for 70 yards. Also shooting those further distances will definitely help you pin point and concentrate on those shorter 30 and 40 yards shots. But definitely congrats on the 8 elk. That’s on my bucket list of animals

 

Thank you. I have been shooting at 40 yards a lot and now 20 yards I'm hitting arrows its so tight, time to move out to 60 and 70. My biggest bulls are two five points and then three rag horns, a spike and two cows. I drew Wyoming Unit 51 Type 9 tag this year and just got back from scouting, I'm hoping this is the year for my first 300+ 6 point.

 

I started shooting long range a few years ago not only was it fun but helps tighten those groups!
