Base layer!!??

Anyone try a cold water wetsuit for a baselayer???

 

You will sweat under that and the sweat will freeze.

Even with a wet suit that hole in your face will still be putting out a lot of scent, stop over thinking it.

 

I wear kayak boots (wetsuit material) when I hunt. I’m a ground hunter who occasionally still hunts. The only reason why I wear them is because the are extremely thin and I can feel what I’m stepping on, which allows me to be extra quiet.

That being said my feet freeze. I wear arctic boot shields when I’m in my spot. In my younger days I was a tournament water skier. I wore a wet suit and it kept me warm. BUT in order for it to work, retain body heat, you have to be soaking wet.

I favor merino or synthetic (as well as any other layers), depending on Temps, how ill be hunting and weather.

Gaiters and/or boots also vary based on conditions.

I wasn’t worried about scent I always watch the wind. Using all that scent stuff may help but I don’t think it’s as important as simply following the rules of the wind. If a hound can find a person in a plywood box with an ozonics running and scent spray on in less than a minute then I’d imagine a whitetail will smell you regardless of what you wear. It’s like being upwind from a lagoon. You can still smell it but it isn’t as bad as the downwind side

That hoodie looks like a great idea.

 

I use Merino Wool as a base layer from Minus 33. Works really well.

 

I use the Merino with the inner wicking liner. I have never found anything warmer and drier at any price.

 

I’ve taken a liking to the first lite merino wool base layers! They are cozy!

 

I do not recommend that. With even a 7mm you will sweat in freezing temps and would not be as near as productive as a good wool baselayer.

 

They worth the coin? I've been eyeballing them and like the company also, but doesnt mean the product is solid.

They are but, for base layers, cabelas makes some that are almost identical with merino wool that are cheaper. I have a set of those too and cant tell the difference.

 

Hmm. Cool thanks. I'm really in need of both early season and late season, which can get stupid expensive. My stuff's just old and breaking down.
