Read a topo map, use a compass, or at the very least know that the sun/moon rises in the east and sets in the west.
Compass is industrial high-tech ... Use the position of the sun. The north-facing side of tree trunks tend to be covered with moss.
You don’t really get much moss growing on trees around me. Not sure why not.. maybe too hot or too humid, or windy... It grows great on the ground though, just not on the trees. Now if poison ivy or poison oak would only grow on a specific side of the tree then I’d be in business.
Depends on the momentarily navigation requirements. Moss is prevalent on the shadow side, not too arid and not too hot climate. A group of trees with consistent moss coating and some sun exposure, can show you the north side with about +-15° accuracy. On a clouded or foggy day much better then getting lost.
Or you can try not being an idiot and go in the woods prepared and not rely on an old wives tale for navigation.

I actually navigate by scent. The scent of fruit blossoming in the western states gives me clues to the west and the smell of beer gives me a clue to north. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
I actually had a compass in my fire pack for the whole 20 years and actually used it, loved to walk with a topo map and explain navigation keeping fred in the shed.

Never leave home without it, after I fritzed my electronics in a rain storm. I have a better compass with my binos.
