Was clearing some trails yesterday and seen something shiny. Reached down to pick it up and here it was an old thunderhead with an xx-75 arrow attached. Judging by the way it was pointed, I looked back and seen a big Burr oak. Memories came back. That's MY arrow from about 1990. I missed a big buck from that oak. I was poor then and loosing that arrow hurt, along with missing that buck.
Interesting. Have someone who does woodworking to make a plaque for a wall-hanger. Reminisce every time you look at it. FWIW, I made one for my wife. Last fall, we were at a writer's conference in SC. First time she shot a X-bow, she put the first and third bolts together for a Robin Hood! Kept them and now they are on the wall of her lady cave.
It's hanging under the eave of the deck now. Heck, I'll cherish that missed arrow like a huge shed antler! I recall that day. My brother missed 5 close running shots at the buck during shotgun slug season. He still talks about it. It was an HONEST 160+ strait 4x4. Late season, I sat in the Burr oak a full mile away from where he missed it. Was cold as hell out. I drew a fraction too soon and he busted me . He checked up for quite a while and I had to let down. Seconds after I did, he took a few steps and I pulled back again but was shaking BAD! Took the shot and.... Found my arrow 30 years later As a side note, about 10 years ago, I was clearing a small area way back in the woods for a food plot. While mowing, I found an old fiberglass arrow with a bodkin head attached. It had been there a long time. Would love to hear the story on that one!
Off topic a bit but another unusual lost-and-found. When I lived on a dairy farm in central Ohio, my uncle lost his wallet while plowing. You guessed it! He was plowing the next year and plowed it up!
A bodkin? Must have been a population of rogue knights running around your area! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I lost a Gransfors Bruks Scandinavian forest axe in my deer woods a couple years ago. I loved that little axe and spent several hours looking for it and was really bummed about it for the next week. Actually, now that I think about it I am still pretty bummed about it. Anytime I've been in those woods since then I have kept a close eye out for it but haven't seen it... It's private land and I am the only one who hunts it (at least legally, I know there are some occasional trespassers, but not often) so I am still holding out some hope that I'll be lucky enough to cross paths with it again some day.
I have a story sort of like this. I live out west so most my hunting is on Forest Service or BLM land. I put out about 4 to 5 cameras out. I have two cameras that take about 2 hours to hike in and check. It was the end of June and on one occasion I get back to the wheeler and there is a camera sitting on my seat. Where we park at the trail head I put a note up with my phone number. In the middle of September I get a call from the fish and game asking if I still have that camera most importantly the SD card. Of course I told them I did. I guess it was part of a poaching case they were working on. I just found it funny that it took them 3 months to call me.
Awesome story! Hunting seemed so much simpler back then. I miss them old days in the 90s when my old man was a warrior in the woods. Can’t wait for him to join me this fall as he makes his return after not going for at least 8 years. I don’t care if I see a deer this year, it’s gonna be so good being in the woods with him again. I know of 3 different arrows I still plan on going back and trying to retrieve one day. One was my first kill with a compound. I got so excited I didn’t even remember to look for it.
Lost my late fathers knife after field dressing a deer a few years ago. I miss both of them. I know I’ll see my Pop again... but that knife could be anywhere on that old farm.
