I’m moving to Maine next month, and also trying to get one with a bow. Let me know if you need someone to help you out.

Thick hair will rob your arrow of energy. Much like a bag target. Cut on contact broadheads do the job. If your arrow is well placed they die quick. Mine went a total of 20 yards though it ran head on into a couple trees and ends up 5 yards behind the bait. It was legal in Michigan when I shot mine so that’s through I took. Take a minute to see where the vitals on a bear are located if you have only bowhunted white tails previously.

Stack some logs up and make a narrow opening that they have to be broadside to get at the bait. Of course they can't be high enough that it blocks your shot, and some bears will walk over the logs, but it does help. Knowing how high the top of the logs are can also help to judge the size of the bear.

Vitals same spot. Tuck in 1/2 way up right behind the front leg. Bear runs 20-40 yards n tips over dead.

Heart sits low in a whitetail. Aim halfway up and the deer drops at all and you just went over the vitals.

Some great information given here! For me my success last season was due to Black Oil Sunflowers and used cooking oil, we made a switch on our bait sites from grains and oats to the sunflowers and they loved it! We also decided to suspended the bait barrel between two trees so they can swat at it rather than have to dig inside of it. On hunts we were aiming to go after a particular bear we added all the sweets along with apples on the ground under and around the bait barrel to help draw them in during shooting hours, and beaver castor as well . Like said above, baiting is certainly a learning experience. We've been doing this for about 3 years now and this is the first year we all tagged out that hunt this property. We just did lots of research and also tested different baits and methods. Also a fixed blade cut on contact head is what I prefer like stated above, but that's your own personal preference. Best of luck to you, you'll be hooked once it all comes together!
    Some pics...

I’m about 4 days away from Wyoming and a 4 week DIY bear hunt. Looking over ground for fall elk hunting.

haha, it's my "Judge" chambered in .45/.410

I shouldn't have said anything then! LOL I should have known better! Yes, she was a dry sow, very aggressive bear at this particular site. Watched her for 2 weeks from trail cams pics before moving in on her. She wasn't the biggest but was very fat and wide, only came in at 200lbs, which still is unbelievable to me.
