Seeing how most of us are woodsman, ladies included, I figured I otter start a morel thread. I have three hail storms on the ground that I am currently working but I still managed to stop at one of my honey holes this morning.
Well if'n I was gonna go, I'd have to shovel to find them. This pic is from this morning. UGH!!! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
Left a couple behind yesterday, they were barely the size of a dime. Expecting a warm rain Wednesday so that oughta kick it in gear
I've never been morel hunting. Sounds good to me. What are some places to look for when going after them? Just looked. Man they are stacked in terms of vitamins and minerals. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
Elms, ash and cedars. Slopes that catch morning or late afternoon sun, afternoon shade. My spot catches a lot of moisture during the winter and good late afternoon sun. Always leave a couple behind for next year. They are absolutely my favorite thing to eat and they boost my brain power or so I tell myself.
Still about a week and a half out here. I will be out in full force soon, can't stand any other mushroom but morels are like no other. Hoping for another year like this
Slice them in half and rinse. Some soak in salt water as they they tend to get small bugs and ants that eat them. I like to then dip them in egg and toss in either cracker crumbs or a good seasoned flour and fry them in butter. I'm a texture freak with food, but a lot of people also saute' them. A lot of other ways to incorporate into dishes as well, they fetch a hefty price if you buy them, especially out of season.
This is what we usually do. Most time use cracker crumbs and fry them. Throw them in with white gravy sometimes for like biscuits and gravy but mostly just the fried method. Would say were probably a week or 2 away from finding them. I usually dont look real hard bit of find enough for nice batvh pr two I'm usually good for the year. Can't help anybody with where to look tho cause I'm pretty sure i find them by luck most of time. Have best luck around hillsides or near little creeks. My grandpa always claimed he could smell them but as I've gotton older think he just had couple good spots to find them haha. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
I'm gonna try this again this year. Had mixed results, but getting cracker crumbs already crumbed is fine by me
I like them a lot of different ways, they make the best cream of mushroom soup ever and if you have a pressure cooker it's a great way to preserve them. Love them fried and breaded in Panko. Sauteed with a little shallot can go one of two ways, make an omelet or deglaze with white wine and throw in some butter and have nice beurre blanc sauce. Any way you eat them they're fantastic!
After quite a lot of searching and self reflection I have come to the conclusion that I have no morels.
We have a lot of them around here but I suck at finding them. The wife and I will be looking in the same spot and she will find 2 dozen and I will find maybe 3. Is there a proper way to pick them? Do you cut them or just pull out the whole thing.
I always pinch them at the base of the stem to break the stem. People who cut them waste too much time being meticulous. You don't want to pull the "root" ball out as that damages the mycelium in the ground. I don't buy into the mesh bags or spore release theories either. I pick em all and use plastic bags. Mesh bags grate them and get tangled on everything.
