So I have had it with the squirrels. When I sit in my stand at any given time I can see no less than a dozen squirrels at a time. One of the little rodents chewed thru the seat strap and my new melinum stand. My little yapping dogs watch out the front door at the squirrels, they know I will not let them out till there are at least 4 squirrels at the feeder. This past week there have been again a dozen at a time at the bird feeder, my littlest dog who is the most adamant squirrel hunter is going to have a seizure if there is constantly that many squirrels. I don't want to use a firearm as that would be unnerving to the adjacent property owners. I will use the pellet gun on a few. I ordered $80 worth of squirrel traps I am going to start by thinning the herd in the yard and then work my way out in the pasture. Does anyone have any suggestions for bait? It will have to stick to the trap pan that will be vertical on a tree. I was thinking peanut butter should work but who knows.
110 conibears on a log. Pb and corn for bait (if cold enough get it near frozen and slide onto the trigger) or just a small pile of corn.

Not sure what to use for bait but 22 workd good on this one. You could also use a blowgun like mr tim wells. Better yet be a good excuse to supress a 22. But i can feel your pain on tree rats. Also u could just hot wire a bird feeder to 110 and ground it good, when squirrel gets on feeder hit a switch in the house. Def kill one Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums

Sota, done this many times . Lean a stepladder against a fence/ tree. Set a coyote sized trap on top and secure it. A few handfulls of corn or cerial and Bam!!. The trap pan needs to be light though.

Gauge I have found from trapping squirrels in my parents attack that if you use a rat trap it has to be in a box so the squirrel sticks it's head in, with the trap exposed the squirrels can use their paws to free themselves from the trap.

I have 4 barn cats 2 of them are worthless. War Kitten is the fighter and deer tracker, Shart has potential last week he killed a gray and a red squirrel. I don't see the cats putting a dent in the population. It is a hell of a fight a squirrel puts up with a cat on it, so I don't see the cat picking that fight on a regular basis.

Could be the 1000 oak trees on the property and there is little to no hunting of them in my area. When my son was in high school he would have squirrel fest with his friends, my son and 3 of his buddies would spend the weekend shooting squirrels. That no longer happens. One good side effect is the raptors the squirrels draw. I do have the little dog Gerty that will chase the squirrels and watch them in a tree. She barks when the squirrel stops running, brilliant hunting dog problem is she is gun shy, she bolts even when I take my bow out.
