Got a buck yesterday morning that I was thinking about doing a European mount for and wondered what everyone’s thoughts were on real skull vs replica.
This is what I do with a buck that isn't getting mounted. I found this way of doing it in a magazine years ago.
Use the real skull if you can take the time to do it right. The is a good thread on how to do it in the DIY forum. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums

Go real unless you bugger it up. I don’t have much use for anything other than euro mounts. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thinking about trying the mountain mikes record keeper kit. He’s not a very nice deer so not sure I want to put a ton of time into it.
This is the one I did a few weekends ago from my Missouri buck. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
If you aren’t in a hurry and don’t want to spend the time cleaning it, you could always burry the skull with rack above the ground and let Mother Nature do the work.
Yeah just depends on where you are and how warm. You can dig a hole, cover the skull with sand to keep the dirt from staining the skull, leave rack sticking out. I covered mine with a plastic tote and put couple bricks on top. It worked great for me. Then you can buy a bottle of hair bleach. The thick stuff and brush it on.
A euro is something I "could" do, but honestly it's not worth my time. My Taxidermist will process a euro mount for $100. I'd have more than that in time and materials trying to do it myself. Dropped mine off on October 1st and he had it ready on November 26th. Well worth the $100 for me.
I do full skull or just the cap. The buck I shot this year I just did the cap but I didn’t make my cut as deep as I would have liked. I sometimes make a barnwood plaque or something similar. Maybe a piece or 2 of old barbed wire and it can turn out pretty cool.
My taxi just bumped his Euro price to $150, which is too much. I’ll be burying my future skulls or just the cap if it’s small and see how it goes.
$75 the guy charges by my house for bare skull. He has plaques but I chose mine without to save a couple bucks. Sent from my iPad using Bowhunting.com Forums
I've done that. It does come loose but what do you use to actually get it out? I've tried picks, skewers, air, hemostat... The outer layer is not that bad. It's the inner that is tough. Tried coming in from the back side but nothing I have tried is really long enough. Just put as small a hole as possible to get at it?
